Advice please

I originally posted on Europe forum about looking to move to Germany or France. Someone replied & advised to post on here & forget about France as I'd struggle to get a job. My partner and I are looking to move anywhere really in Germany but somewhere we could get jobs (neither of us speak German). We aren't in any rush to get moving so really would like some advice on best places to look into and jobs etc. I'm a senior manager at a call centre and my other half is a housing officer for the local council with some IT experience. When I've been looking around I have found some english speaking call centres but not sure what areas they are in.

Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated,

Amanda

PS What are prices like for renting? Cheaper or more expensive than the UK? Bearing in mind I live in Barnsley, South Yorks : )

I can't imagine anyone getting a job in a call centre here, without speaking German. IT specialists are sort after. I suggest you take a few holidays here and see which areas you fancy. One agent that might help you is called Manpower, you can read their website in English.
www.Manpower.de
www.borderlesstalent.manpower.com

Hamburg is the most expensive area followed closely by Landkreis Starnberg and Munich. Bavaria is our favourite though, we live in Landkreis Starnberg.
To get an idea of house prices look at the website:
www.immobilienscout24.de
There you can look up renting and buying (mieten und kaufen)
I would suggest you start learning German, if you decide you really want to move here.

Hi, my Anglo-French daughter works part-time in a Berlin Call-centre, ringing French companies for market research. She does in fact speak German, but it isn't needed for France-oriented calls.
Having said that, I agree that the OP and partner should both learn German if they want a decent joint income in Germany....

Thanks for replying. We both intend to learn German. We just wanted some advice to help point us in the right direction. We want to go and visit some areas and find where we like, as I said we aren't in a rush but we have to start thinking seriously, saving money and starting plans at some point. We don't want to rush and make a mistake. Thanks again.

Here's my two cents :) Avoid Hannover.

But seriously now...
I can only give you my limited opinion, as I have only lived near Berlin (a small town on the outskirts) and here in Hannover, but nonetheless, here it is.

Berlin is fabulous for English speakers, and there does seem to be jobs there as well. I think you are wise to learn German before coming here. Personally I didn't and now four years on, I still can't speak it. I understand most of what is said to me, but speaking it is a whole other can of worms. Learn as much as you can before hand or you will be very very limited on not only the job you can get but also on how you integrate into life here. I am sure you know that and don't need to be told :)

I have heard good things about all of Bavaria and Hamburg as well. There are loads of English speakers in Munich and the city is quite metropolitan. An excellent forum for reading all about life in Germany is http://www.toytowngermany.com/ . A great wealth of information there on anything you can imagine about living here.

It's very good advice to come here and have a tour around to see which areas you like. Do you want to be near mountains, water, city or country setting and etc. etc.

Germany is a great place to live in general I have found. I hope things work out for you :fingerscrossed:
