Default Packing for LCL Shipment

From my reading around, it seems that cardboard boxes are commonly used to pack items for LCL shipping and I'd be happy to use them too. They are low cost, can be nicely piled up and shrink-wrapped on a pallet and they make efficient use of space. But my concern is that they're not good if the pallet is left out in the rain. So what is the likelihood that pallets shipped via LCL sea freight are left out in the rain?

hi Montakute,
Typically boxes for LCL shipments are loaded within a wooden crate (called a 'lift van') to protect them from the elements rather than being in open or shrink wrapped pallets, when we do it we line the lift van with plastic to avoid any water getting in.
Hope that helps?

Could anyone please tell me the size of the boxes that the shipping companies use, as it states on the form I have to fill in how many Small, Medium or Large boxes will you have for each room.

Hi Susan,
These can vary slightly by company, but as a guide at Bournes ours are as follows:
Small - 45 x 33 x 33cm (most suited for heavy items like books)
Medium - 45 x 45 x 50cm (standard carton, typically used for china, glassware, toys, pans, electrical items etc.)
Large - 45 x 45 x 75cm (typically used for lighter items like linen, folded clothes, soft toys, bedding etc)
Hope that helps!
