Vitrificateur vs polyurethane vernis

I've removed some old lino and found a nice hardwood parquet floor beneath it. I've been stripping off the glue, and scrapping off the old varnish. There are some areas that need a little work, and I'd like to give it a dark wood finish (possibly a deep, dark reddish stain). I'm not entirely sure what 'vitrificateur' is in English though - is it some sort of lacquer? Is it far removed from a polyurethane varnish? It would need to stand up to fairly heavy duty use as it's in a living room/dining room. Thanks for any advice!

Thanks DMU, so it seems there's not really much difference other than the Vitrificateur is liable to be more durable and less odour.

OH decided to splash out (i.e. expensive) on a vitrificateur in the sitting room before we moved down. It gave a more natural sheen than varnish, and lasted a long time (although I can't compare that with a varnished floor).

Thanks again DMU and Listen Very Carefully. I actually have some vitrificateur in the barn that I'd forgotten about, it should still be good. Just deciding on a good undercoat/wood stain to use first.
