UK address for EHIC?
 

I've been in France for a few months and have an EHIC, I will apply for an E106. Has anyone here used an EHIC? I have a number of prescriptions to send off, but do you put a UK address on the back? I could use my parents address or we are still having our post redirected so could put our old address. But I'm concerned that we're doing the wrong thing to save a few euros - is it worth it?

If you are no longer a UK resident then you are unable to legally utilise the National Health service any more

An EHIC card is for holidays only, whilst you are a uk resident

You need to apply, as you say, for an E106 if you are not of retirement age and an E121 if you are.

Thank you for your help. I have read that often people use them while they are being affilliated into the french system - has anyone done this for a little while until they get sorted?

People may do it, but technically I think it is in breach of the rules. Once you arrive in France, with the intention of living here, you become resident. You need your E106 straight away as your EHIC is not valid as you are no longer UK resident and might not be reimbursed for any costs you incur. In the period before you are affiliated to the french system (for whatever reason) you should, in theory, have private health insurance. My advice is to sort this out as soon as possible, as health care costs can be catastrophically expensive if you do not have any cover. Personally, in answer to your initial question, no, I certainly do not think it is worth it to save a few euros, it could end up costing you a lot more.

when you say all it takes is a phone call, what do you mean? I've called the DWP to apply for the E106 and I have to write to them - any advice?

Yes - write to them as they suggest. If you are not entitled to an E106 then they will tell you so - in writing.

Me too, 2 years ago. They responded in writing, one positive and one negative.



Keep ALL letters from them as you need to show them to gain your carte vitale.


Your ability to get an E106 depends on a few things. Mostly, if you have contributed enough to the NI in the last 2 years.

Maybe we just have another satisfied customer. I was able to my back prescriptions reimbursed here after I got my carte vitale. Incidentally I asked for and got a French EHIC at the same time but I was asked to show my English EHIC (good job I hadn't thrown the card away when I got my French one) before they reimbursed a proportion of my earlier prescriptions. As you know they don't reimburse the whole amount, which also means you have to have the money up front to pay out before you get some of it back.

Hooray! I now have my E106 - well, they are sending it to me, valid until Jan 09, which is better than nothing. I can send off the prescriptions that I have since we arrived (my OH is on regular medication).
What happens at the end of the E106? and can we use it for dentists and opticians?
