Re: To Toulouse or not to Toulouse!!
Thanks for your reply. I have had a look round and all the intensive 4 week courses are expensive (1250-1500 euro). I could do a basic course in the UK but they say it will be difficult to find work in France without the full course.

I don't really believe that - When I recruited, TEFL was never on the criteria list both in my last and present company ... sounds suspiciously like bums on seats for the TEFL school ;-)

Mmmmmmm, confused now! I have no experience and don't know anyone in this particular field so I will have to do some more research as I am now unsure what to do!!

Re: To Toulouse or not to Toulouse!!
I joined the field with teaching experience in schools in the uk but no tefl... I had a steep learning curve for the grammar but the rest was very similar to my work before. You could think about an online TEFL course.... i to i is good apparently and about a tenth the price of TEFL Toulouse....

Re: To Toulouse or not to Toulouse!!
That sounds about right.
INTESOL is not bad too for online courses.
I did a TEFL a long time ago at the University of Central Lancashire - I enjoyed it, it was great, but it didn't help me get subsequent jobs.
The two companies I worked for went to great pains to knock the traditional 'TEFL teacher' out of me ;-)

Thanks for your help. I have just been looking at online courses. The INTESOL is about half the price of the toulouse course when you include observed teaching practice and the I to I one about a third but without observed practice.

Re: To Toulouse or not to Toulouse!!
Hi,
I've found this thread and we're in a similar position, we just seriously considering an Airbus offer. Our kids are 7, 9 and 11 and at his pint don't speak any french. International school won't be an option as its too expensive and anyway, if we're doing this I really want the children to be properly part of France, if you know what I mean.
It's a bit scary though, does anyone have any advice about finding schools, and working with the school to help my kids settle?

Re: To Toulouse or not to Toulouse!!
Hi Dawn,
We moved to L' isle jourdain in November last year, we have 2 children 4 and 2, it has been a challenge but we are starting to really love it here. The eldest has started in the local school and we had help from Airbus to enroll her in there, she does not speak any French but in only two months we are noticeing her picking up the language if only the basics.
I love this area it is quiet but I have found local french groups to take the two year old, and the people here have been nothing but helpful. There is also an English group tots and co. about 15 mins drive away.
The local mayors office are also offering free french lessons which I am trying to enroll on. The only difficulty i am having is the bureaucracy of finding a child minder / creche for my 2 year old. Any one with any advice on this would be gratefully received.
Please feel free to contact me if I can be of any help it is a great move and still early days for us but it looks like its going to be a good five years.
Finally if you are on facebook look up Toulouse Area English speaking Forum - this has been a wealth of information and there was a big discussion on Schools only last week or so.

Re: To Toulouse or not to Toulouse!!
Hello Petch...please forgive me if you know this already, but do you know about the Halte Guarderie system in France? If you Google Halte Guarderie Isle Jourdain, it would appear you have one right in the middle. They are excellent and will take very young children. My son started with them at about 18 months old and went a couple of afternoons a week, because I wasn't working, but it just got him used to playing with other kids and gave me chance for a good long walk wth the dog. He continued to do that up until he started school at 3 and a half. He loved it, and they did painting, and all sorts, all happy memories from there. Best of luck.

Glad you enjoy the area! If I can help you at all just pm me

Re: To Toulouse or not to Toulouse!!
Thanks I have heard of the Halte Gardarie service and have tried numerous ways to contact them in L isle jourdain but have been unsuccessful in getting any response - I think more due to my lack of french language and understanding of the system. I have found notices with contact details for child minders and am considering ringing them. However, I have concerns - how do I know if they are suitable / qualified to look after my child again the language barrier ! The sooner I can sort the child care and get to the lessons the better.
Dennerlysmum - do you know of any child minders in the town please?
thanks

Hi, go along to your Mairie to ask. I've forgotten what the actual procedure is, but that's where I started for our halte-garderie.
Alternatively, ask the other Mamans with prams/pushchairs at the Maternelle when you pick your child up - they'll be able to recommend occasional baby-sitters/minders!

dennerlymum - yes please that would be great we are in isle jourdain - need to be as only have had one car up to now so on foot everywhere.
I have asked at the Marie and have been given numerous numbers to call and keep getting passed to the next person. I think there is a waiting list for the Halte gardarie, from what I can gather !! Thanks though I will keep trying.
