I want to buy some minor electronics (a buck boost step up DC voltage converter, a cigarette lighter socket and some wire) in order to use my solar power panel to charge my car battery. Is there a French equivalent to Maplins / screwfix / toolstation that I can go to? I konw about Norauto already and will check them next time I'm near one. Thanks!!

You could also search quincaillerie in your departement on Pagesjaunes.fr
The quincailleries are great because you can find all those silly little things that you used to find in UK ironmongers.

FYI Maplins went bust over a year ago.

Correct, Maplin went bust and all stores closed in 2018. The brand name was purchased and relaunced the same year. The Maplin website was relaunced in 2019. Ordering from them now however just wouldn't make sense due to additional costs in the wake of Brexit. Ditto for Amazon UK etc.

Add M&S to the list. I was going to order some things yesterday, until I noticed the caveat about Customs Declarations....
Useless to look for French equivalents for my non-French-shaped figure, so fingers crossed that travel to the UK this year will be possible!

Thanks for the German link Moses2013. Over the past few years, I have found when I can't find what I need in France, Germany has often been a good source, despite I don't speak a word of it.
