It all depends on your personal situation ie. if you have children, salary earned, social contributions etc.
This was the chart for 2006
Taxable income (Euros) Tax Rate %
Up to 5,515 0
5,515 to 11,000 5.5
11,000 to 24,432 14.0
24,432 to 65,500 30.0
65,500 + 40.0

Employers' Social Security ranges between 35% and 45%, and employee's contributions between 14% and 20%.

Although it looks high, there are many things you can claim and offset against it. When we were renovating our property we could claim many of those costs against tax. If you have children at school (even if they are over 18) you also get generous allowances. In South Africa before we left we were paying 45% and there was hardly anything you could claim back. Here, my husbands tax bill has only been around 2500 euros a year at most.
When I was travelling from here to work in UK, my salary there was half his here but I ended up paying more tax a month.
These are some of the things you can claim for

Maintenance payments
Maintenance payments resulting from a court order issued after formal separation or divorce proceedings are tax deductible.
Child/Parent support payments
Child support payments are tax deductible. Support payments to parents may be deductible if the taxpayer can prove that his/her parents are in a situation of need.
Contributions to French charities, French political parties, educational, scientific, social and cultural organisations
Childcare
Healthcare
Employment of domestic personnel
Major repairs for the main home owned in France
Education of children in secondary or higher education
