Perhaps the key is that I was not majoritaire. The accountant was most insistent I should not be.

Aaaah, that explains things. I was majoritaire, the sole employee, with two strawmen to constitute the compulsory three partners.
Getting back to TH, if he's only intending to stay a few months in France, there's no point in setting up such a complicated business structure.

I'm more confused now than when i first asked this question. Setting up as ZZP (self -employed) n the NL was a cinch compared to this. Is there a professional organization that can offer impartial advice on this subject?

That of course is precisely why France introduced the AE scheme - because it recognised that the other regimes are complicated and were seriously putting would-be entrepreneurs off starting up businesses.

If you could see your way to working within the contraints of a micro for a couple of years while you get your head round how business works in France and start to appreciate the differences between various regimes, you would find it easier. Otherwise you'll be very much at the mercy of your advisor, and you'll only find out in retrospect whether their advice was good or not.

There will be organisations locally who will give free advice - chamber of commerce, maybe a centre de formalités d'entreprise at your communauté des communes - your mairie will tell you what business services there are.

[QUOTE=EuroTrash;11819355]This might be a useful link, it explains the differences and relative advantages and disadvantages of being salarié versus non-salarié. It is a choice to be made - it would be nice if you could have all the advantages of both statuts and none of the disadvantages, which is what IVV seems to have contrived, but normally one can't.

This looks useful. Tx Eurotrash

Thanks everyone for your advice.
Have visited the recommended websites but my technical French isn't so good and I may be missing key points - so have made an appointment to visit the (not so) local Chambre du Commerce to get some detailed info on the pros and cons of each option. I can update this thread on these options if anyone shows any interest in receiving feedback.

Yes please update the thread.
Do take your business paperwork and accounts to your appointment in case the business advisor asks for it - they'll likely want to give advice that has a bearing on your specific situation, rather than try to explain in detail every possible permutation of every French business statut, which in one appointment wouldn't be possible.

Eurotrash = thanks for that advice. I'd already considered doing a one page summary of my existing business's status and taking a USB with all my records with me. It's good to have someone on my back with stick :-) sometimes we (I) need it !
