Re: Politics anyone?
Last night's debate Hamon-Valls was announced to be explosive. It wasn't!
However, for the life of me I can't understand Hamon, who is advocating for a reduction in working time and a universal income. Imho that has to be the last thing France needs to combat it's massive unemployment situation, and growth stagnation problems - just to mention a few.
At least Valls now proposes to de-tax excess hours - a measure previously put in place by the right-wing government under N. Sarkozy, only then to be suppressed by Flamby. Now, wasn't it the Valls government who last year also forced through the very unfavourable labor law under the so-called 49-3, which allowed each company to lower the cost of overtime hours!
Confused? Me too!
Who was it that said, white-man speak with forked-tongue?

The idea of the universal income is to face up to the fact that there's never going to be enough full-time work for everyone, so if nobody needs to work full-time in order to pay the bills, the work can be shared out more evenly and everyone can have a more fulfilling life. The nation will no longer be divided between those who have a job and are required all the hours God sends to support themselves and those who don't have jobs, and those who can't find a job and are depressed. Paid for by the increasing use of robots which has in part created this situation.

We automate everything we can and online vendors are crippling the high street I dont relish the prospects of any child picking their career path here now with the French inability to let people change career paths at a drop of a hat.

I'm not sure if anyone believes in polls anymore (after Brexit & Trump election), but for those who do, a very recent Harris poll indicates 69% of French wish for Fillon to withdraw from the presidential race, 58% of right-wing sympathizers.
I say "Innocent until proven guilty", and we should know the result in approx 15 days from now.

I don't think there's much doubt he's guilty - his wife was quoted in the media as saying that she never worked for her husband, during the very same period he was claiming money to pay her.
But then, it seems to be rife, Farage and Le Pen and everybody who's anybody are all at it, and whilst it's an unethical thing to do, it's also pretty obvious that whoever it was that fed this to the media had known about it for some time but was keeping it back to use as a weapon at the most effective moment. They didn't announce it in the public good, they announced it for devious political reasons of their own. Which is also unethical. So one question is, should the scum who employed that despicable strategy be allowed to get away with it and achieve their objective?

BTW I'm stuck in the UK right now, can the French pronounce Penelope correctly? (Or does it rhyme with cantaloupe?)

This article Frantic talk of 'Plan B' as PenelopeGate wrecks Fillon's Elysée run - France 24 highlights the issue quite well.

As for the name, well they pronounce it the French way, which as you say rhymes with the melon.
Talking of pronunciation, it always used to amuse me that the French referred to Pope Benedict as Pope Benoit. By the same token I suppose that the Italians would refer to the new French left-wing leader as Benedict Hamon - which I find quite amusing. As for the Spanish, officially referring to the Queen's son as Principe Carlos, well
