Re: OU French
What level? L120 is excellent (approx old-style A-Level-ish in standard), as is L192 (sort of old-style O-Level-ish). After that, it gets too expensive for me! Very imaginative courses, great peer support on the online forums - indeed, online is the name of the game for L120, and also to a lesser degree for L192. All very forward looking, and excellent in a way that only the OU can be. Great stuff, if that's your learning style.

Re: OU French
My OH and I are thinking of L120.
Are we wasting our money by both signing up or might we get most benifit if one of us signed up one year and then the other the next.
Our main problem is that we will be in Scotland up to the end of June and then in France for July. August and September. At the moment we don't have internet connection in France. Is there a lot of constant contact required or is it a case of short downloads and sending doccuments. We could use a high priced dongle if we can get a connection in 19260

It is certainly possible to do L120 with limited access, although it will make life harder than you might like:
1 - Most tutorials are held online, and last for about an hour. Whilst these are not mandatory, they are very useful.
2 - The online OU forums are very good, for contact with other students and with tutors. Invaluable.
3 - Assessments are generally sent online - 'Word' documents for the written elements, and mp3 files for the spoken tests. I believe that these can also be sent by post (printed, or on cassette), but for how much longer, who knows? And there are various things that can be downloaded which are useful but not essential.
4 - Again, the final exams are generally done online - live for the oral, electronic submission for the written. I believe there is provision made for submission by post and by 'phone, but again, for how much longer?
So, yes, I believe it is possible to do L120 with minimal connectivity, but in reality a good internet connection is expected if at all possible. If in any doubt, ask the OU directly! And certainly a computer of some sort (even without internet) is required for the interactive DVD, which is an essential part of the course.
As for who does the course and when, I guess this depends on your learning styles, your respective abilities, etc. I could see a simultaneous approach working quite well if you are evenly matched, and naturally provide mutual support. On the other hand, if one gets easily dispirited when the other zooms off ahead, then maybe not! Only you have the experience to know!
