I guess if you've been in France for 8 years and you still don't feel at home here, going back to the UK may be the best thing to do.

If that's what you decide to do, start notifying the authorities both sides of the Channel and get the formalities rolling so that hopefully you will not be left in limbo whilst responsibility for your healthcare, benefits or whatever is transferred over. In the UK you will probably need to prove that you intend to live there permanently, and you haven't just come back to give birth and will then be off back to France; once everyone is satisfied on that count then you should be readmitted to the NHS straight away.

I guess it will be like moving to France in reverse - find work, then find somewhere to live and take it from there, one step at a time.
