looking for advice
 

Hello everyone

I'd like a little advice if possible as you have been through this before and I'm not sure what to do next.

I moved to France about 6 months ago. I left my job in UK and luckily was financially secure enough not to need another job for a spell. So my move here was basically like a holiday. I moved in with my French partner and he's recently added my name to his apartment and his carte vitele (is that how you spell it?) I really need to officially register myself somewhere else, I'm sure, i.e. the marie or the tax office. As I'm not working I don't know what I'll have to start paying. Someone told me I'll have to pay all the taxes anyway whether I'm working or not, which worries me. Then someone else told me that I wouldn't have to pay much at all. I want to be all above board here but I also don't want my remaining savings to disappear on formalities (or maybe I'm just being naive). My plan is to start my own business as a holistic massage therapist, although I'm still not fluent enough in French to begin yet. I know once I start work I'll have to pay everything, which isn't a problem. It's just now while I am in a rest period that concerns me. :confused:

Does anyone have advice for what my next step should be?

Hi and welcome, nice to have you around.
Sounds as if you are getting yourself into a real tizz. Sorry your french partner hasn't been more help explaining things to you. Good though that you have some security in the appartment and getting a carte vitale. Perhaps the next step would be to visit your local prefecture and to register for your carte de sejour. It is not necessary to get anymore but if you do have one it will save you a lot of hastle. It is not that difficult to do, and I am sure you partner can help you fill in the forms.
As for tax, in France you do not have PAYE as in UK. If you are not working, you will not have to pay tax. You will though have to declare money you earn from savings etc. The first 5666 euros of taxable income is free.

Thanks for replying so promptly. I'll start with the carte de sejour and take it from there. At least you haven't made it sound so difficult or complex to register here. I've had so much differing advise I didn't know where to begin.

hope it helps. From our own personal experience, we didn't find it difficult at all, it's just different from the way things are done in UK:lol:
Just take one step at a time and I'm sure you will be fine.
Don't forget, there are lots of people here to help you if you need it.

Hiya J,

I'm curious about your "holistic massage therapy". I've a girlfriend in Edinburgh who does something similar. She gave me a session once and I went shopping just after. I let rip at some woman who tried to get in front of me in a queue. I'm not normally like this. Her session gave me the courage to do something that I would not normally do.

Do you "lay on hands"?
