Can't say I agree from my and my OH's experience. Yes, food can be pricey if you don't use markets; wine we all know about (hic), but culture is alive and well in our part. The two hour French lunch can frustrate, but I don't see it just as a 'symbolic' statement; the €12 lunch cafés have car parks stuffed with white vans and HGVs. Our fellow villagers are not youngsters, but there is energy in abundance; our theatre troupe has been going for many years.

I can't say I find misery and unhappiness. Yes, there are times when my franglais is inadequate, but that's my problem. The French to learn English to be happier? When I go back to the UK all I see and hear is unhappiness; a moan a minute. Weather, housing costs, rates going up annually, traffic, state of roads and potholes; check out the Letters page of any local rag, or check out the comments when a council decide to bring in wheelie bins! Victor Meldrew is alive still!

"utter rubbish" is not usually a word I use lightly but what a pitiful compilation of pre-conceived ideas and pre-digested cliches. With such a rag, I doubt the author will one day hope for the Pulitzer prize

I agree as well! The French neighbours that we have are far more positive than the folks we know in the Uk; just one of the many reasons why we want to be on the french side of La Manche...
