Post again in the General Section "New Thread" with specific questions (work, healthcare, schooling, ...) and we'll do our best to advise you on general life in France, even if we don't live anywhere near Tours!

Re: Introduction Thread (Somewhere to say Hi)
Hello to all,
Posted in a few specific threads but thought I'd say hi.
Am moving to Bordeaux for 2 years as I have a research fellowship at one of the Universites.
My husband & cats are coming too, it's a big step to leave UK but an amazing opportunity for us all. My husband will take the time as a 2 year sabbatical from employment, and maybe be a house husband if we decide to start a family while we're there too.
Thanks for reading!
Becky

Hi everyone.
Any day now im goig to be a dad for the first time, were very excited and have been looking at moving to south east or south west to continue my work as a tree surgeon in better climates than here in the uk and give my family a better happier healthier lifestyle.
I have a friend in the east where I go a few times each year to help him on his tree jobs and I enjoy my time there very much however I would prefer the less commercial life so I'm more interested in moving to the west, however being more rural area is there any need for someone of my skills?
Would like to hear from people already living down there whether they have ever needed tree work or know of anyone who has had tree work done.felling a tree for fire wood takes minutes and it the kind of favour job I'd do for people. I'm an arborist who earns money from tree maintenance of large mature trees to improve shape and make safer or make the tree less intrusive to a building or property.

Hi Drew
We came out several years ago now and have had a fair bit of tree work done. I have a very good friend in the UK who is a tree surgeon ( for 30 years), so know a little bit about it.
A lot of tree work here is pollarding. Quite specialised, as you need to know how to trim the starter shoots for a lot of very different trees in a different climate.
There are a LOT of highly qualified French Arborists - (Elageurs etc).
All who come will tell you - France is not an easy option. There is little work, even if you speak good French, so it means you become dependent on the English community. Where a lot of people are giving up trying to scrape a living.
The climate is good. The food is excellent. The quality of life is much gentler - the French generally work to live, not the other way around, although that is changing - but you need to do a lot of homework and be very certain of your work before you come out here with a youngster. There is little in the form of social support for new arrivals until you have contributed to the system for some years. I would think twice if I were you.

Hi All
Quick intro, been browsing this forum for some time gleaning info but now reached the point of needing to ask some questions - so sign up time.
Seems the more I find out the less I know.
Still in the UK but planning for a move in the next year or two as we head towards state retirement - not actual retirement.
Bound to be a taker to start though some of our research may help others.

we live in the south west dept 47 , and would be interested in exchanging accomodation in return for tree work ?
i have various trees which require climbing to deal with their size , and this is something i couldnt do.
let me know if you may be interested.
Thanks

Hey all,
We are supposed to be moving to Paris later in the year for my wifes work so I thought I'd say hi.
Well I say Paris but in truth we'd like to avoid the centre, she will be working in St Germain en laye so we will be looking for somewhere with a realistic commute that is not the usual suspects of Croissy or Le Visenet.
This may however be not realistic.
Dunno.
Anyway Hi from me!
JB

Just wanted to say hello as I am a new member to the forum. We have a house in the Auvergne (43) in the Gorges d' Allier near Brioude. We love the space, unfortunatly we can only visit for holidays, but we love the area and the locals.

There aren't all that many BE members in the Auvergne. You could try a regional forum...
