When we first completed the registration for our house, we declared it as a 2nd home.
Go to your local tax office and query your bill.

Ours is lower by 257euros compared to last year.
That relates to a difference of 421euros - an eye-watering difference of approx 2,700 francs saving (I still tend to relate to FF in terms of important sums) compared to the 847e we paid in 2016 under Flamby. Say no more.........

Funnily enough 0€ for me this year, maybe due to the substantial drop in my income. On the other hand, I found an Avis de Taxe d'H for the first time ever, for the appartment which I rent out. I have duly demanded its cancellation....

How do you manage to live on 0 euros ? Or do you mean that your french tax bill is 0 ?

Mine is about half last year's, down to 80€ from around 160€. But, for the last 10 years it's always fluctuated due to low earnings - in good years when I earned a bit more the bill went up a bit, in poor years when I earned less my tdh bill was less. If your taxable income has always been very low, Helen, it could be that you already had maximum reduction and they can't reduce it any more.
But TBH the only way to understand why your bill is what it is, is to look at the calculation on the back (or the second page online). It will tell you whether each element the basic tax set by the commune has gone up or down and by what percentage, and it will tell you what reduction if any has been applied. If you have a 50% reduction but your commune has doubled the rate, you will pay the same even though the calculation is different.

I'm amazed at all your low Taxes d'H. Last year, ours was just over 900€. The village house isn't a mansion, but as said, one factor is the household income and OH had decent pensions, twice my own, so I must be classified as "low income" now. As an aside, the Taxe Foncière was slightly increased this year, a bit more than the Taxe d'H.

I have always found the automatic income-related reductions for primary residences to be very generous. What's a low income and what isn't, is very subjective of course; I know many people would consider my income low but it doesn't seem particularly low to me, it's been plenty for me to live on, and it's nowhere near low enough to not pay income tax. But the taxe d'habitation that I paid as a resident, has been around half what I would pay as a non resident. I don't know if different communes have discretion to do things differently because I have read posts in the past where folk are adamant that they don't get any reduction despite being on a low income.
For a tiny one up one down terraced cottage that is no longer my primary residence I'm looking forward to a tdh bill of 500+€ next year :-(

Similar numbers here - it seems we get taxed according to hours of sunshine here in the south!
