The oft referred to 'International' licence is another popular misconception as in fact there is no such thing. What you can get from the Post Office or AA etc., if required, is an International Driving Permit (IDP).

Agreed however the thread did start off referring to a UK licence

Apart from the 3 year validity as opposed to 1 year in UK the French version has the same effect and the fact still remains that it is not a licence or a permit to drive and only stands in conjunction with a valid national driving licence as evidenced by the fact that you need to produce your normal licence or permis to obtain it.
