By 1870 wars involving one or more of Britain, France, Austria, Russia, and Prussia, and sometimes with the Dutch, Spanish, Poles, Italians, or Turks/ Ottomans thrown into the mix, had been almost continuous for over 200 years and only finally came to and end in 1945. There wasn't even really a hiatus after 1918 as Europe was ravaged by numerous wars and uprisings for the entire period between the first phase (1914-1918) and "end" of the World War in 1945, which continued in Korea and hasn't technically yet been concluded there.

Actually, not many French pupils study this war in depth, AFAIK it's covered in the year before the Brevet (which covers WW1 and WW2). The exception being Alsace-Lorraine which was ping-ponging back and forth between France and Germany, and the German influence is still very present there in many respects.
I haven't watched the videos in the link, but Arte is apparently showing the programme on 18th August, if any one's interested.
