It all depends on where in the Dordogne.
Wherever you live you need to get to London or Ashford then with connections etc it about a further 7 hours to Limoges, Angouleme or Bordeaux.
Have you looked at the TGV website? Another helpful site for travel is Trip Advisor. Type in 'Dordogne forum'.
Car rental is advisable as the Dordogne is quite rural and there is little public transport

[QUOTE=Ka Ora!;8778730]You have to change in Paris as well, Unless their have changed it.[/QUOT

... and you have to cross over Paris for the southbound trains with all your luggage...
It's going to take a long time from the north of England, with at least one overnight stop somewhere. And, unless you have a French Reduction Card, TGV tickets are expensive... Impossible to tell you how much, though, as the fares vary depending on date, time of day, etc.. To give an example, a single Montpellier-Paris mid-day mid-week would cost about 100€ without a Card (more early-morning or evening weekdays and at weekends).
If your wife isn't absolutely terrified of flying and is simply "not keen", then the train journey time and cost should persuade her to try a low-cost from the North to the Dordogne (from where to where, exactly?)

Just checked the TGV website. Its £145 return St Pancras-Limoges. Not bad really but its all the hanging about and wasted travel time and if you don't live in London it get expensive with add-ons like overnight accommodation.
There is no contest with Ryanair.
Love 'em or hate 'em its the only way for the Dordogne

Sorry to split hairs, but the cheap tickets at that price must be PREM's and CANNOT be reimbursed or exchanged. Exchangeable ones would be about 250€ for one return, which in fact isn't bad from London-Limoges-London compared to Montpellier-Paris-Montpellier!!
In addition, the OPs would have to pay fares from Darlington to London and from Limoges to Eymet!
I once went to the Sussex coast from Montpellier by TGV, Eurostar and BR train from Ashford, and spent a lot of time and money doing so. A quick Montpellier-Gatwick-Mtp is the only answer for me nowadays, and flying from the north of England to Bergerac must be the only option, too....
Bon voyage, however!
