First with French election news ?
Hi
Back home and watching French TV.
Voting finished 18.00 - 20.00 depending on area (now 21.30 here).
All guesses are -
1) high turnout (somehow favours chirac)
2) Le Pen will have around max 20% (based on exit polls)
3)In my village Le pen had around 30%
So tomorrows headlines will either be :
French voters fight off Right threat
or
100% of French voters vote for right
Me ? I'm not allowed to vote for the president (too important, I suppose)

There was indeed a high turnout (82%) and it did favor Chirac, who also got 82%.
Since Le Pen himself had declared that anything less than 20% would be a defeat, Le
Pen had a defeat. The front page headline in Libération read: OUF 82% pour la
République The front page of Le Parisien headlined: La France a gagné
I live in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, and here Le Pen was below his national
score, with only 8.44%.
Being a French citizen, I am allowed to vote, and I observed something funny when I
was in the voting booth yesterday around 3 PM. One is required, so as to preserve
voting secrecy, to take both ballots. So you take them both, but what do you do
with the one you don't want? Eleven people simply left them on the counter in the
voting booth. The unwanted ballots were all for Le Pen, discarded in a neat little
pile. When I added my unwanted ballot to the collection, it made 12. Although
legally you are not allowed to make a political statement in the voting area, I
think this was one.

I live in the South.
Le Pen support was far higher at around 25% by departement with isolated towns recording 30+%.
A message for Chirac ?
