Re: Expat club and french lessons
Honestly you would be much better joining a local French club inetersted in the same interests as you. Chess, Yoga, art ... whatever floats your boat. Your marie will have a list. Not only will you meet locals - who may well include the odd expat and your french will begin to come naturally.. T he Marie will also be the source of information re French language courses.
The other thing is to watch French televisio and the natural wan, Learning any language needs a multiple approach and the natural way is by learning to listen and understand, read and understand, speak and finally write. I've got as far as step 3/4 from a standing start even though I am married to a modern languages teacher otherwise known as my secretary!!
Good luck and welcome to France and the forum.

Re: Expat club and french lessons
Your mairie will have a list of all the associations in the commune.
In my area for instance there's an anglo-normande association, I think it holds various events and meetups and it also runs French lessons. Is that the kind of thing you had in mind? But obviously it depends on how many Brits there are in the area, if your commune is quite small you may need to look in nearby big towns. Google should be your friend, often they have Facebook pages and sometimes you find a particular pub that caters specifically for Brits.
AFAIK there's no expat club with branches all over France, if that's the sort of thing you were hoping to find.
Joining a local association that's in line with your interests (walking? painting? knitting? sports?) might kill two birds with one stone, a way of getting to know the locals and making new friends and also a more fun and more effective way to learn French than formal lessons. Just a thought.
EDIT Sorry GrannyB, after all this time and nobody answering our posts crossed! But, great minds think alike as always
