English Language Telly in France

What English language television is available in France? Do they have SKY or some version of the BBC?

Sorry if this is a tired thread, but it would really help me if anyone could give me some advice, as to the best cable/satellite package I could find at the moment.

Of-course I want to assimilate and watch French television too, but I'm still learning the language and would find a bit of British telly very comforting of an evening, for the first couple of years at least.

Thanks,

Sarah.

you can watch bbc through a sky box abroad. You need a card to obtain a signal though. You can buy all the bits on the net. I think that companies in France do them too.

Thankyou moose!

BBC via SKY...I didn't know that was possible. I'm very technophobic and behind the times, so if anyone else answers this thread, please bear that in mind, and don't be afraid to patronise me!

Hi,
If you have a sky account in the uk you can bring your box and the card over with you, there are a few companies over here that specialise in pointing the dish at the right satellite they will fit it all for you and is reasonably priced - I will try and find the company that we used and pass on the details to you - I dont think you ca nset up a sky account once you are here though - something to do with copyright laws but I might be wrong - also you do lose the interactive services such as the box office (pay per view ) films and you need to have a UK address for sky to send you the bills - we use the mother in law :D

You don't need a subscription to Sky if all you want to watch are the free channels. Also, check out freesat (http://www.freesat.co.uk/) for cheaper alternatives.

A standard European set-top box (costing <50euro) can also be used to receive British TV although not interactive TV (red button).

I don't know if anybody knows any Internet sources for watching British TV?
I did try to watch the Monaco Formula 1 the other month, and plugged in a digital box with its own mini aerial into my computer. Managed to pick up the main French channel that deals with sporting events, and tuned into Radio 5 Live on the Internet, but when it came up to the commentary they refused to broadcast it outside of the UK.
I don't have a TV in France, so haven't watched French or UK TV for many months (Monaco F1 asides!). Although I think French TV would not be a bad thing to improve on language skills, I can't say I miss having a TV whatsoever.

We brought our English DVD player over with us and it worked fine, although of course we needed an adaptor plug.

It certainly is not a problem watching British TV from France. Your local sat provider should help you out here. If not, then someone will point you in the right direction.

Thanks,

We have CanalSat (ex TPS) which, apart from the hundreds of channels in French and other languages, has BBC Prime, BBC World, CNN and a host of other English-speaking channels, and we took an "Option Cinéma" which offers about 10 channels showing nothing but films, all with the choice of Original Version with French sub-titles or dubbed. And all for only 34,50 € a month.:)
