Default Driving 7.5ton vehicle in France.

Hi, we will be purchasing a property in France shortly and will live there permanently.

I have a large motorhome (max 7.5 ton weight) that we wish to take with us and use in France.

Can anyone help with some questions...

1. If I registered the motorhome in France would I still be able to drive it on my UK licence?

2. If registered in France then I assume it would have to be insured in France, could I do this on a UK licence?

3. How much would it cost to register it in France.

Any help much appreciated, regards Dave.

Yes, you can drive it on your UK licence however it is generally very difficult to register a UK motorhome in France and I doubt 7.5 tons will be possible at all. Motorhomes, and caravans, have to conform to French standards with regard to electric and gas installations amongst other things, and achieving this can cost a fortune. Another important point to bear in mind, if you commit a traffic offence in France and are obliged to exchange your UK licence for a french one for the deduction of points, you will henceforth be restricted to driving a max train weight of 3500kg which is the max permissable on a French private car licence.

Apart from the cost of any neccessary modifications the fee will depend on the CV rating of the engine and could be up to several hundred Euros.

Believe me, you'll do yourself a huge favour if you sell it before you move
