I really appreciate you taking the time to reply, the information you gave was very useful.

I will be looking at engineering positions I am currently a LINAC engineer working in the NHS and also studying for an MSc in Medical Physics. The big attraction for me is that it is a showcase of two things that interest me greatly, engineering and physics. I want to work in an environment that is exciting and dynamic, where my work is making a useful and meaningful contribution, and where I can further develop my knowledge and skills.

Do you also work in an engineering function?

Yea.

If you are looking at engineering positions, you want to keep an eye out for posts in places like BE-ABP-HSL, BE-OP or maybe TE-MSC. However if you are looking for a physics related position, you will be at the end of a very long list and I wouldn't get your heart set on it. Recruitment process at CERN can take a very long time, if I were you I would put a CV in for one of the spontaneous discipline applications and see how you go from there, and if other posts turn up in the meanwhile apply for those as well.

I can imagine physics posts are very very sought after. I recently saw a posting at the ISOLDE facility, I believe this is a facility producing new isotopes for nuclear medicine applications, among other things.

How do the spontaneous applications work? Do the recruitment team trawl through the spontaneous applications looking for the skill-set they require for a particular function?

Firstly the Gessiens (people from the Pay de Gex) are the most the most annoyingly obtuse, closed and sometimes downright rude people in France, (yes even more so than Parisians).

Hi Dom, I grew up in Geneva and would like to say that the whole Rhone Alpes region is a great part of the world. I played cricket up at CERN where a lot of international CERN workers also played and coached. I would imagine that you will meet a lot of interesting people as CERN is a very well respected facility and place to work.
