Interesting, thanks philat98. I had to look up plastic mulch, but realise we bought it to control weeds in the raised bed of the low maintenance garden of our rented out flat. We covered it in fine gravel for aesthetic reasons (obviously not necessary on an allotment). Makes sense in helping to keep the moisture in the soil. I'll see what cheap options are available here.

Mulching retains the humidity and protects the land from storm damage. I dig trenches about 30cm deep and fill them with well rotted cow manure. I put the drip tube on top and then the mulch. I buy mulch that is holed in the same positions that matches the drip tubes. With this system you can get some good yields on tomatoes, peppers and melons. I started by using just a hosepipe but this system works a lot better. As you say it also controls weeds so your maintenance is a lot easier.
I use a 1000ltr plastic tank to get a constant pressue on the drip tubes. You have to keep the tank empty to avoid algae growing.
