Default Buying in Calvados?

Bonjour, Mesdames et Messieurs,

I'm new to this forum, though not to the board. I'm a Brit resident of Canada and am starting to make plans to retire to Calvados where my wife has strong family ties. We've just about paid off our mortgage here in Canada and are considering buying something which could be rented out as a gite for a few years until we need it full time.

Has anyone done this or has anyone any thoughts on how practical it might be? We're thinking of using an agent to manage the property and handle the advertising, tenancies etc etc. Any advice? I't be appreciated.
