Re: bringing dog to france from non european country
Can't help personally, but
http://vosdroits.service-public.fr/F20553.xhtml
indicates that the "titrage sérique" of a pet to be brought into France from a non-European-Union country, must be done at least three months beforehand in an approved laboratory of a EU country, and all the papers and a health certificate issued by an "official" vet from the country of origin, must be presented to the French Customs upon arrival.
i.e. it can't be done in France after arrival.
Hope this helps!

I realise it has to be done before but wondered if the Frenh authorities recognised UK labs - seems to be so from the sites I have read but wondered if anyone had any practical experience

We brought our dog from Ireland to France. Ireland and UK have same rules and regs. re rabies shots etc. Had the vaccinations done ahead of time, Pet Passport stamped , no problems at all.

Re: bringing dog to france from non european country
I can just repeat that my above link states that pets entering France from a non-European country must have official certificates from the country of origin, together with proof of protection against rabies as certified by an "approved laboratory of a EU country". Logical conclusion: approved UK laboratories are recognized by France.
Good luck!

we brought dogs and cats from South Africa to France. There were no problems. Just got paperwork from local French Embassy. All paperwork completed in South Africa before we left. All their jabs were up to date anyway, rabies etc. and we just had to take all the animals to be checked by our vet 24 hours before we flew. He stamped and signed paperwork to say they were fit and healthy, which was then presented to customs at Charles De Gaulle airport when they landed.

There should not be any problem if the formalities are duly complied with. I too bought a cute pair of puppies from an Asian country and got all the paperwork done including pet travel passport through the local French Embassy there. The puppies had to go through a thorough examination that included its current health conditions, date of vaccination etc. After that they provided a signed and stamped copy of certificate declaring that the pets were fit to travel. These papers had to be produced twice before we actually reached France. Once, before the customs officials at the UK airport where we landed first and again checked by the ferry port authority at the time of Channel crossings.

Also, you must book your dog under the pet passport scheme offered by the Channel ferries whilst travelling between the UK and France.
