Could anyone please advise what I should expect to pay for an English to French translation for each of the subject certificates?
Unless advised otherwise, I plan to find a certified translator locally, and wouldn't like to think that my French accent would prompt an automatic 10% or so increase over the normal rate.

No idea of today's fees, and I'd be interested to know, too.
I've got to provide up to 5 Birth Certificates for OH's various Pensions de Reversion and am wondering firstly whether the Caisses will each demand a certified translation (nearest professional in Béziers), and whether they'll accept that there aren't any "mentions marginales" on British BCs (when checking that I haven't remarried since last month....).
P.S. Did you have the same fun as I did when ordering the Certificates on-line? Whatever happened to Somerset House and snailmail?

Thanks for rapid repy. I've downloaded & printed out both birth & marriage cert application forms, and planned to send off to the Southport General Register Office at the beginning of Nov. Don't wish to get them too early, risking then they may be outside the 3 month max validity for the interview at the Prefecture next year.

Regarding birth certificate with "mention marginal", I have some experience with this, and explaining to the French authorities that our birth certs don't comply. It never used to be the case here, but these days firearm request/renewal portfolios request an original birth certificate with the mention marginal. During renewal - and to ensure there's no refusal - I always now send a copy of my original birth cert (looks like new despite the age) together with a brief letter in French explaining why there is no additional mention. This has always been acceptable to the prefecture and police dept. If required I could provide a copy of my letter, which may assist others too.

Incidently, I'd planned to send off the completed birth & marriage cert application forms "by post" as specifically indicated in the GRO application form guidance notes, unless there's another (which I've not yet found) indicating that e-mail is now the preferred method. You make it sound you did this by e-mail - which was no fun.Reason?

I did actually see the snailmail address, but I haven't got an English chequebook for payment. And the Caisses want the documents ASAP. I'll include a letter explaining about the lack of "mentions" and try to get away with translating them myself...
I managed to negotiate the GRO site after getting myself registered, and somehow ordered 5 copies to be sent DHL.Had a heart attack when I saw the cost. I succeeded in the end, with dispatch by snailmail, with a final moment of panic when the text msg from my bank with a Code to validate my (French) Visa Card took a long time to arrive....
I've forgotten the word for phobia to on-line operations on internet, it was mentioned on France Inter the other day. I suffer from it, anyway....

I used to work with an agency in Paris that specialised in translating legal documents, and I have in the past recommended them to people who've reported back after shopping around that their prices were competitive, they used them and their customer service was good. As it happens I've subsequently fallen out big time with this agency, but I recognise that the fact they're no longer my flavour of the month as a client doesn't necessarily mean they no longer provide a good service to customers. So if you any of youse wants to pm me for details I will oblige and it would give you an idea of cost at least. But hopefully your own translation will be accepted.

We had a marriage and birth certificate translated for the prefecture. In Lyon, they required the translation be performed by a court accredited translator. It is probably worth asking the prefecture for a list of accepted local translators. Below is the list of translators we were given in 2012.

We paid about 70 euros for the two single page documents. We found many on the list were no longer accepting new work.

Yes, I noticed too that the priority service for a birth certificate copy was almost 24pounds, so I understand the reaction of a x5 DHL charge!
I'll go for the 'cheap' & cheerful 9.25pounds version, especially as I was very small when it was originally issued.......
Believe the 'fear' word you were looking for is cyberphobia or technophobia.
Now I wonder what the name is for someone who fears for those suffering from phobophobia.

I just checked on the form I have to complete, and it too specifies they require the translation be performed by a court accredited translator. Pity, otherwise we could have provided our mickey-mouse version.

I certainly suffer from technophobia, teaching old dogs new tricks springs to mind, but the French word I'm looking for was coined for people who panic when filling in forms on-line (e.g. Déclaration des Revenus...). And I do get in a tizz...

I found this in my fruitless google search! Phobie administrative will do, but France Inter did announce another word... I'll put it in the "Useful French expressions" thread if I find it!

Slightly off-topic, but I managed to overcome my phobia just now, ringing the 3646 and getting registered on the Ameli.fr site (with a Code sent to my mobile) to request a CEAM (French EHIC). This was necessary as I'd forgotten to obtain one to cover my trip around Europe at the end of the week, and I could print out a temporary certificate. I can now leave zen thanks to my bravery!

I've been advised by a court accredited translator that the price for the translation of marriage and birth certificate will be 70 euros for the two single page documents. So that's what I'll go for, effectively the same as indicated by graham.miln in post #6 above.
