Battery hens
 

I am looking to adopt some hens mid way through this year. Ideally I would like to rescue some battery hens but it appears that the UK is one of the only countries in Europe that is fighting against this awful system. France, it seems, has no regulations on this atm, which is making my search difficult and infuriating. I am in the process of contacting various refuges etc for rescue birds but ideally know that Battery hens are in need of good homes and is my priority before looking at just getting some from market. The UK has an organisation for this and has an easy adoption process for rescue birds but cannot find anything in France.

Regret I can't offer any advise on rescue centres, but agree with ET, you're thoughts for adoption are to be commended.
One question. Do you plan to get mercury, lithium or alkaline powered battery hens?

Ha ha ha :lol: Thank you. Unfortunately I think French laws on this matter are once again in the middle ages and may have my work cut out trying to do this but I think is an important thing to try and do. The UK has a great set up for rehoming battery hens and commend them for this. France's welfare on animals leaves a lot to be desired but will hopefully come back with some good news soon on this.

A huge thanks for the dignité link ET! I have now sourced some battery chickens for June time so looking forward to rescuing them! Thank you so much. I am so much happier knowing I can make a different and adopt some birds in need. I didn't understand much of their reply to my email but the links are very useful. :goodpost:

Whichever type they are, they're going to be flat when the battery farmers have finished with them.

Not a very helpful comment when we know how hard it is going to be to pick six out of hundreds going to slaughter! Something I am not relishing.

A french friend of mine kept chickens and sheep in his chateau.
When a Dutch friend came to visit, he decided to bring some chickens from Holland (instead of wine) ;)
They were travelling by car on the hottest day of the year and the stink from the chickens in the car was overpowering.
They had to slow right down and drive with the windows open to reduce the stink.
True story.

Well you couldn't make it up really could you 😳! I am sure customs would of had a field day if they had known there were chickens in the car!

Laugh of the day. I have just emailed a tourist office half an hour from us as I think there may be a animal market there for les poules. She has just replied with an address for Netto in my nearest town :lol: I wasn't quite looking for one that far gone :huh:

I never had much to do with hens, they never seemed particularly appealing somehow, but a few years ago in the course of my job I picked one up and cuddled it, and she looked at me and kind of clucked at me, and I realised that actually she was awfully cute. And very silky to stroke. I understand now that one can get very fond of a hen.

Will do. I have not had much joy since my last posting. I have the right links and received a reply from Animaux Dignité and there are Facebook links claiming to help people look for exbatts but the page isn't that up to date and not receiving any useful replies, so may be having to look at going to down route of getting them from a reputable breeder, which is not really what I wanted. Shame as the UK is so geared up for this kind of thing. Not very useful organisations if you ask me. Think french laws need a shake up on this kind of thing. The FB pages haven't been updated since July 2015!!!
