Apparently there are heatwaves andheatwaves, the excessively high temperatures for extended periods appear to be playing havoc in some vineyards. In several departments, many thousand hectares have been impacted by the current heat wave, the grapes burned and shrivelled as if attacked by a blowtorch, which according to the viticulteurs is an exceedingly rare occurance.
The market gardeners too have not been spared, with many fruit trees and their products destroyed by the intense heat.
Having said that, have you tried the Cantaloupe melons this year? Sheer heaven! Served up with Jambon de Bayonne or J. de Parme, chopped basil leaves and a sprinkling of walnut oil. One of my favourite cooling appetizers during this period.
Also to excite my taste buds during these summer months, Mme TP has been frequently serving an excellent cold Gaspacho with jambon de Bayonne.
Ah!........I see it's almost lunchtime - still with a crazy OAT of 32degC (89F) in the shade. Even the new dog seems to be suffering, and is much more comfortable indoors.

We keep hens and we lost all but 2 died.during the June cannicule. We've waited until their large run has been altered to give more shade and it is marginally cooler. They were collected earlier in the week so fingers are crossed. As for the vignerons, they are quite happy at the moment. Vendage will be early and the yield will the less but the quality will be good, our neighbour tells us.
