Default Re: Tropical Cyclone Linda - South East Queensland

Severe Weather Warning
for ABNORMALLY HIGH TIDES and DANGEROUS SURF

For people in parts of Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast Coast Forecast Districts.

Issued at 11:00 pm Tuesday, 13 March 2018.
Tropical cyclone Linda to produce dangerous surf and abnormally high tides along the southern Queensland coast during Wednesday and Thursday.

At 10 pm AEST Tuesday, tropical cyclone Linda (Category 1) was located in the Coral Sea about 770 km northeast of Sandy Cape and 1030 km east of Mackay, moving south southwest at 21 kilometres per hour. Tropical cyclone Linda is expected to continue to move southwest towards the Queensland coast for the next 24 hours, before turning south and ultimately southeast away from the coast again. On Wednesday, conditions will become unfavourable for tropical cyclone Linda, and it is expected to transition into an intense subtropical low.
Gale force winds over offshore waters across the southern flank of the low are expected to produce large east to southeasterly swells along exposed parts of the southern Queensland coast on Wednesday and Thursday. This will combine with high tides to cause hazardous conditions within the warning area.
Dangerous surf conditions and beach erosion are expected to develop during Wednesday morning along the east coast of Fraser Island and the Sunshine Coast, and then extend southwards to the Gold Coast during Wednesday afternoon and evening. These conditions are likely to persist into Thursday.
On Wednesday morning, water levels may approach or slightly exceed the highest tide of the year along the open beaches. However, on Thursday morning, tides are likely to exceed the highest tide level of the year with inundation of low-lying areas possible on the high tide.
Locations which may be affected include Noosa, Maroochydore, Caloundra, Coolangatta and the eastern side of Moreton, Stradbroke, and Fraser Islands.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* Surf Life Saving Australia recommends that you stay out of the water and stay well away from surf-exposed areas.
* Check your property regularly for erosion or inundation by sea water, and if necessary raise goods and electrical items.
* If near the coastline, stay well away from the water's edge.
* Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it's flooded, forget it.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 am AEST Wednesday.
