Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology Queensland Tropical Cyclone Three Day Outlook for the Coral Sea Issued at 2:33 pm EST on Thursday 6 March 2014 for the period until midnight EST Sunday 9 March 2014. Existing Cyclones in the Eastern Region: Nil. Potential Cyclones: At 1pm a weak tropical low was located approximately 1,115 kilometres east northeast of Cairns, moving south southwest at 30 kilometres per hour. The low is expected to strengthen as it moves slowly to the southwest over the next few days, and may approach Queensland's northeast coast during the weekend. Likelihood of a tropical cyclone in the Eastern Region on: Friday Moderate Saturday High Sunday High NOTES: The likelihood is an estimate of the chance of each system being a tropical cyclone in the Region for each day. Very Low: less than 5% Moderate: 20 to 50% Low: 5% to 20% High: over 50% The area of coverage for this outlook is the Coral Sea and northern Tasman Sea west of 160E. http://www.bom.gov.au/qld/forecasts/cyclone.shtml ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 70%+ chance of becoming a cyclone in the next week May cross the coast though that currently seems unlikely. What is more probable is that it will track south offshore bringing very heavy rain and cyclonic winds down the coast at least as far as the Whitsundays. Looks like being a Cat 1-2 but conditions are good so it may become a Cat 3. Rainfall in the range of 100-200 in 24 hours likely on the coast to the south of the system, but if it moves in really close to the coast then this could increase to up to 400mm in 24 hours. Rain likely to move in Saturday, increasing Sunnday/Monday. |

At 10:00 am EST a Tropical Low was estimated to be 560 kilometres east northeast of Cairns and 630 kilometres northeast of Townsville and moving west southwest at 34 kilometres per hour. The tropical low is expected to move in a west-southwest direction today before adopting a south-southwest track during Saturday. The tropical low is expected to intensify into the weekend and it is anticipated it will form into a tropical cyclone on Sunday. GALES may develop about coastal and island communities between Cairns and Mackay during Sunday. A Cyclone WATCH remains current for coastal and island communities from Innisfail to Lucinda. At 7:00 pm EST a tropical low was estimated to be 370 kilometres east northeast of Townsville and 285 kilometres north northeast of Hamilton Island and moving southeast at 15 kilometres per hour. The tropical low has not shown signs of development in the past 24 hours, however it may slowly intensify and develop into a tropical cyclone on Monday afternoon. The system is expected to continue moving in a general south southeasterly direction before becoming slow moving and shifting to a northeasterly track on Monday. It is likely that the system will remain off the coast. However there is greater than usual uncertainty regarding the track and there is still a chance that it will move towards the coast. GALES are expected to continue about central coast and island communities and may extend to coastal comunities between Lucinda and St Lawrence during Monday. Heavy rain, which may lead to flash flooding, will continue about coastal and nearby adjacent inland areas between Bowen and St Lawrence overnight and during Monday. Large waves may produce minor flooding along the foreshore between Lucinda and St Lawrence. Tides will also be higher than normal. Issued at 7:08 am EST on Monday 10 March 2014 The Cyclone WARNING from Ayr to St Lawrence has been cancelled. At 6:00 am EST Tropical Cyclone Hadi, Category 1 was estimated to be 270 kilometres northeast of Hamilton Island and 380 kilometres east northeast of Ayr and moving southeast at 12 kilometres per hour away from the coast. TROPICAL CYCLONE Hadi, CATEGORY 1, has developed over the past 6 hours and is forecast to slowly strengthen further over the next 12 to 24 hours. The cyclone is currently moving in a southeast direction and should develop a northeasterly track during the day today. The cyclone is forecast to remain well offshore of the coast. DAMAGING WIND GUSTS have now eased along the east coast and adjacent islands.Further gradual easing of winds is expected throughout today as the cyclone moves away. HEAVY RAIN has now eased and is no longer expected to affect the Queensland east coast.
