Re: Tropical Cyclone Yasi
Yeh, the colour scheme doesn't do it any favours!
More measured debate here if anyone is interested:

Have a look here.

Just look at the size of the thing.
If I was anywhere near it I would be hitching up the van and getting the hell out of town...

Ta, interesting comparisons ... it's very interesting over at the WeatherZone forum, lots of minds trying to predict this one.

It's massive! The animation is awesome.
Hope it doesn't wreak havoc, but it will.
I would evacuate now if it was heading here.

Wonder what will happen if she slows down for a bit of a breather.
You know, to take on some extra sustenance.

Apparently this storm has the potential to be the biggest storm QLD has ever seen.

I hope it fizzles out too. I really don't like the look of the maps and plans that are coming across my desk, and I can't believe its not top story on the news (not that I've seen any news today). However, when I consider that I have people telling me I'm scaring them by mentioning storm surges and saying that they just don't want to know, I'm starting to wonder whether I'm actually dreaming the whole thing. Yes it might not happen, but people said that about Larry and Tracy, and then all they could say afterwards was "Why didn't we get more warnings".
Perhaps I should just stick my head in the sand like a large part of the State seems to be, and hope it all goes away.

Re: Tropical Cyclone Yasi
There's an increasing number of my work colleagues here in Cairns who are doing the equivalent of sticking their fingers in their ears and going, 'la la la la...' over this. They are the same ones who were worried about Anthony. A friend of mine who had the roof of her house in Innisfail ripped off by Larry said she felt the same level of complacency from work colleagues then.
It seems like some people can't deal with the size of this one and therefore refuse to accept that it might hit us. Of course a lot of them veer south and hit Bowen or Ayr (they seem to get loads) but Larry didn't...

Re: Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi
Looks to be a big girl on the radar!
On my first trip to Oz we did a cruise from Cairns to Townsville and we had an encounter with a cyclone one afternoon, the Captain was trying to out run it and get us to a safe harbour for the night. Just lets say it was "interesting" but also quite scary and I think that was only a little one.
Batten down the hatches and stay safe everyone up there!
