Re: Tropical Cyclone Yasi
I've been through a big cyclone before, I believe it was a high level four or a moderate level 5, and it was bad news. Hope this thing changes course or downgrades its temper!

My expert opinion ... it's going to get wet and windy later in the week ...

famous last words, but they very rarely come this far south - but even so you'll find out well before your date.

She looks like a nasty peice of work - because she is so large there is a lot of wind and rain, mostly to the south side of the centre. That's the biggest concern. The ground is already saturated, especially in the south of the State, and many trees are unstable due to their roots being in wet soil - similar to the situation in the UK in 1987, and the reason we lost so many trees there.

They are working with EMQ, and all our alerts and press conferences are on the QPS pages.

Re: Tropical Cyclone Yasi
Currently expected to make landfall between Innisfail and Mackay, possibly as Cat 4.
Significant storm surge also likely - potential flooding of low lying/waterfront areas possible.
The majority of rainfall and wind will be to the south of the point of landfall = maybe as far as 300km south.
This is NOT one to play with. This is a serious threat.
Regardless of someone complaining this morning that they were warned a cyclone "might" be coming, and then it didn't, people need to be aware this is coming. If you are in the area likely to be affected ( Cooktown to Yeppoon) and you have elderly neighbours, or people you think are not aware of the threat, please make sure that they are told.
I'm no great fan of Bligh, but what she says in this press conference needs to be listened to - its from the Bureau of Met, from EMQ and from QPS.

Have a look here.

Just look at the size of the thing.
If I was anywhere near it I would be hitching up the van and getting the hell out of town...
