I can't believe how many there are, inbox is still full of quake alerts. 27 including and since the big one yesterday, thats just Japan, and thats only 5.0 upwards.

Just a few decades ago, if several hundred people were killed by an earthquake in eastern China or a tsunamia in Indonesia for example, the media in the rest of the world would not know about it until several days, or even weeks, later, long after such an event would be deemed "newsworthy". So by the time this information was available, it would probably be relegated to the back pages of the newspaper, if at all. And the Internet didn't even exist. Think back to Mt St Helens in 1980. We are now getting this information almost immediately so it makes it feel like there are more events happening.

I remember reading an article years ago that said if Yellowstone goes, it will take out about 1/5 of continental North America but the one to really worry about was lake Toba in Sumatra which is "yellowstones big sister"
I agree on the communication thing. now people worldwide know within minutes because of twitter, closely followed byall the other media. And because people travel more they identify more with other places and are more likely to have family, friends, and contacts there. As the world gets "smaller"so we hear about more events that years ago would've passed us by. We also get far more details now which makes things seem more importnat, as if we were involved personally.

>>Heard somewhere about Yellowstone Park too, apparently in 12 months it has moved 6 inches. It has only moved a few CM in 100 years......IS this the next thing to go?<<

If Yellowstone *does* let go it's going to be an earthchanging event comparable to the dinosaur extinction. So let's keep our fingers crossed

0220: Sea level has dropped five metres off Fukushima, confirming imminent arrival of tsunami - Japanese TV.

The sheer power of nature in something like a tsunami is incredible, isn't it.

It's worrying when even Jp tv live media are now admitting radiation levels up as far away as here in Tokyo....
