Severe Weather Warning for heavy rain
for people in the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Northern Tablelands and North West Slopes & Plains forecast districts


Issued at 11:15 pm EDT on Friday 25 January 2013.

VERY HEAVY RAIN EXPECTED OVER NORTHEASTERN NSW DURING THE LONG WEEKEND.
Weather Situation

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald currently lies over eastern Queensland and is moving slowly south-southeast towards NSW. This system has brought widespread heavy rain to eastern Queensland over the last few days and this will extend into northeast New South Wales on Saturday as the low draws near.

Very heavy rain, which may lead to flash flooding, is forecast for the Northern Rivers and northern parts of the Northern Tablelands forecast districts from Saturday afternoon. Locations to be affected include Byron Bay, Lismore, Grafton, Tenterfield, Kyogle, Yamba and Maclean. These areas are likely to see in excess of 100mm of rain fall on Saturday.

During Sunday, the very heavy rain will extend into the Mid North Coast forecast district in addition to the Northern Rivers and Northern Tablelands, with 24 hour totals in excess of 200 mm likely in these areas. Northern parts of the North West Slopes and Plains are also expected to be impacted by heavy rain on Sunday, with 24 hour rainfall totals exceeding 60 mm. Additional locations which may be affected on Sunday include Tenterfield, Armidale, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Taree.

Further heavy falls are expected about the northern half of the NSW coast during Monday.

Winds and waves are expected to increase through the weekend and may reach Damaging levels during Sunday and Monday.

A Flood Watch for Major river flooding is current for NSW coastal valleys from the Queensland border to the Lower Hunter, including the Upper Macintyre valley.

People are advised to refer to www.bom.gov.au/warnings through the weekend for updates to this warning and flood warning information.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.

For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

The next warning will be issued by 5:00 am EDT Saturday.

Issued at 10:35 pm EDT on Sunday 27 January 2013.

VERY HEAVY RAIN, DAMAGING WINDS AND SURF OVER NORTHEASTERN NSW.
Weather Situation


Ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald currently located over southern Queensland expected to move rapidly south through eastern New South Wales on Monday to be near Sydney around midnight on Monday.

Heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding is falling in the Northern Rivers, Northern Tablelands, Mid North Coast districts tonight and is forecast to extend to the Hunter during Monday morning, then to the Metropolitan, Central Tablelands and Illawarra forecast districts by Monday afternoon.

Destructive winds around 80 km/h with peak gusts of 140 km/h are forecast for parts of the Northern Rivers forecast district. Destructive winds are expected to ease gradually during Monday morning. Damaging winds around 60 km/h with peak gusts of 100 km/h are forecast for Mid North Coast and Northern Tablelands expected to extend to Metropolitan and Hunter forecast districts during Monday.

Abnormally high tides which may cause sea water flooding of low lying areas and very heavy surf which may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion are forecast for the Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast, and are expected to extend to the Hunter, Metropolitan and Illawarra forecast districts during Monday. Beach conditions in these areas will be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas.

Since 9am Sunday 284 mm has been recorded at Hopkins Ck (near Mullumbimby), 140 mm in Coffs Harbour and 104 mm in Comboyne. Flood warnings have been issued for several rivers in eastern NSW. Please refer to www.bom.gov.au/nsw/warnings/ for the latest flood warning information.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
Keep clear of fallen power lines.
Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.

For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

The next warning will be issued by 5:00 am EDT Monday.
