It certainly looks frightening from the coverage here in New Zealand. Not something I'd want to experience.

Door knocking has been done in places likely to be hit by the storm surge, and mandatory evacuations were possible. There are Disaster Declarations in place which means the police have the power to order people to leave - as in some of the flood zones recently (Condamine, Theodore etc).
Anyone who has stayed in their homes even outside the expected storm surge zone is now advised to "shelter in place".
