Default Floods - Queensland

Useful info for anyone who follows the Queensland weather.

The Bureau has a new product this season, the Flood Watch.
They will cover a wide area of the state, and give advance notice of possible flooding across a wide area, as opposed to the existing Flood Warnings, which are only issued after rain leads to a river catchment reaching a certain level.

They will be listed in with the usual warnings on the website. First one issued today.

Queensland Warnings Summary

INITIAL FLOOD WATCH FOR PARTS OF SOUTH EAST QUEENSLAND

Issued at 1:58 pm EST on Thursday 11 December 2014

Issue Number: 1

A Flood Watch has been issued for parts of the Central Highlands & Coalfields, Capricornia and Wide Bay & Burnett forecast districts.

An upper trough is forecast to bring showers and storms to south east Queensland during Thursday, spreading to rain areas during the evening and overnight into Friday. Widespread rain is forecast for much of Friday, clearing away during Saturday.

Rainfall totals of 50-100 mm are possible, with locally higher totals likely with storms.

Recent rain over the last week has wetted the catchments. River level rises above the minor flood level are possible.

Heavy rainfall may also lead to localised flash flooding.
