FLASH FLOOD WARNING DOWNSTREAM FROM TOOWOOMBA/ BRISBANE FLOODING

http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDQ20780.html

Broadcasters are directed to use the SEWS for this warning.

TOP PRIORITY
FLASH FLOOD WARNING FOR LOCKYER CREEK
Issued at 5:00 PM on Monday the 10th of January 2011
by the Bureau of Meteorology, Brisbane.

Very heavy rainfalls have been recorded in the Toowoomba area and caused extreme
flash flooding. This rainfall is also causing extreme rises in the upper Lockyer
Creek at Helidon with very fast and dangerous rises possible downstream at
Gatton in the next few hours. Rises will extend downstream of Gatton during
tonight.

Heavy rain areas and thunderstorms are expected to continue through the
Southeast Coast district, far southern parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett
District and eastern parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt district. Heavy
falls may lead to localised flash flooding and/or worsen existing river
flooding.

Further rises and flash flooding are likely in the creeks and streams around
Brisbane and Ipswich associated with the heaviest rainfall.

Flood warnings are current for the Mary River, Sunshine Coast streams and the
Upper Brisbane and Lower Brisbane rivers. A severe weather warning is also
current for this region.

Next Issue:
The next warning will be issued at about 8:30pm Monday.

The guy on ABC news tonight says the only thing saving Brisbane is the Wivenhoe Dam. Let's hope nothing happens to that, cause we're all in the firing line from there and Toowoomba.

Lockyer Valley residents urged to evacuate

Swathes of southeast Queensland are being evacuated as more rain heads to flood-affected areas.

Police and emergency services have advised people in low lying flood prone areas on the Sunshine Coast, Esk, Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley to evacuate to higher ground.

The warning extended to low lying areas between Gatton and Ipswich, where residents were advised to evacuate to higher ground.

Cr Jones said there was no time to door-knock residents in the upper parts of the valley before the flash flooding hit.

‘‘There wouldn’t have been time, it came up too quick,’’ he said.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the creek was at 18.92 metres at Gatton at 6.30pm.

The previous record was 16.33 metres in 1893.

Here's hoping the rain eases up soon and that no more lives are lost. Can't even begin to imagine how scary it must be to be confronted by that amount of water, and how devastating it would be to lose everything. :(:(:(

The Toowoomba footage was really scary tonight. I'm heading off to the shops tomorrow to get my daughters birthday presents and party supplies and enough food for us for at least a few days. According to the news tonight there are a couple of low lying points in our suburb that are at threat if the Brisbane River floods. We're pretty high here, but don't fancy going out in my car after tomorrow for a few days if the Brisbane River floods.

"Record flood levels of 18.92 metres were recorded at Gatton this evening before the station failed. This level is well above the previous record peak of 16.33 metres from the February 1893 flood."

Man, that is major stuff.

We're in Brisbane itself and the flooding is not forecast here until Wednesday. I'm assuming it will just be the river rising and flooding low lying river suburbs like Corinda, Oxley, East Brisbane etc. Am I being too optimistic that if it happened there wouldn't be the kind of flash flooding and devastation seen across the rest of the state?

There's a list of suburbs in the Courier Mail. The link is back up the thread - it's a long list. I have family in East Brisbane.

Re: FLASH FLOOD WARNING DOWNSTREAM FROM TOOWOOMBA

Thanks guys, I saw the list and am in Coorparoo, but pretty high up so can't imagine it flooding up here, just wondered if I'm out and about driving around with the kids in the car and other parts of the suburb and adjoining suburbs are at risk of flooding whether anyone has an insight into whether it will be a gradual thing with the high tides and excess water from runoff or whether the levels will rise quickly.
