Earth tremor shakes Melbourne’s north, east and southern suburbs

RESIDENTS across Melbourne’s east and southeast felt their houses shake as a 2.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Pakenham.

Geoscience Australia has confirmed the quake hit the southeastern suburb about 11.40pm at a depth of 10km. By 12.20am it had received more than 100 calls about the quake.

Dozens of residents in Pakenham and surrounds took to social media to report feeling the earth move, with some dubbing the tremor the strongest they’d ever felt.

Most of the accounts have come from residents in suburbs across Melbourne’s east and southeast, including Montrose, Noble Park, Pakenham, Ferntree Gully, Berwick, Heathmont, Rowville, Beaconsfield, Cranbourne North, Seaford, Lilydale, Narre Warren North and Hallam.

But reports have come from as far north as Coburg.
