Default Unique Australian moments

Large mozzie buzzing round my head.

Clap hands together in air cleverly killing it first attempt, then realize my hands are covered in blood from squashed mozzie.

Who's blood I have no idea

Probably mine - was outside in shorts yesterday evening - I have 22 bites on one leg and 11 on the other

Back in late 80s when I moved to Oz, I had an old VW Beetle (my girlfriend's actually) that I drove to work. Something went wrong with it one day and opposite to my work was a mechanic, he had a look at it and said some part of the drive shaft needed replacing.

No problem says I, when can I pick it up? Sharp intake of breath from mechanic, 'not for a while, that part has to come from bloody Woop Woop'. I tell him ok, let me know when it arrives and the job is done.

Return to work where my 'friends' are all gathered having lunch and innocently ask 'where's Woop Woop'?

you can guess the rest

When I saw this, it reminded me of the Aerogard ad with Max "Tangles" Walker back in the late 70's ..... It was so popular at the time, Paul Hogan did a parody of it in one of his specials......

Not sure why, but I dont trust any of this stuff, even household fly spray, which I still use, as there is no other real workable method in Aus, I wouldn't apply this to my body.

I put it definitely on the Cancer Causing/Allergy causing side of the fence. despite evidence to to contrary, I just have a inbuilt distrust of the stuff and my instincts are usually pretty good. IE: I've been on the butter/Animal fats are good side of the fence for years, and look at the latest scientific facts.

As for uniquely Aus moments, sitting here at 11.10pm sweating my arse off in humid conditions. Most unpleasant... unless your on holiday and on the booze, outside looking at the stars... then it's okish.

OMG That is just so Aussie.

I think partner must have grown up on that ad.

I am anti chemicals, hate spray poison, so imagine my horror when I see him grab the aeroguard can and spray it in a circle around his head, 3 inches from face, eyes, nose, mouth. Insane.

Same aussie macho disregard for all chemicals, insects, black and brown snakes, sun, UV, even asbestos back in the day.

Does everything that kills ya, but never been sick, seen a Doctor once in 25 years.

Oh and triboy

Unique to Aus? Every single overseas holiday I've taken since I was 10 at least one member of the family has done that. It's very entertaining when you're about 12 and you slap one on your dad's head and smear unknown blood all over it. It's very impressive how much blood a tiny insect can hold though...

Same job, same 'friends', a few weeks earlier. Must've been my 2nd or 3rd day on the job, which also meant I hadn't been in Oz long as I landed a job within 5 days of arriving.

Anyway, I was helping the boss re-arrange things in the warehouse, lots of fork lift work. Then he says, 'I might get you to move those pallets over there' and walked off.

An hour later he's demanding to know why I hadn't done it. I said to him I was still waiting for him to make his mind up

Thankfully he laughed instead of sacking the 'dumb Pommie'!

The old 'I might....' I've used that one in the past to the confusion of Aussie workmates, well funny
