Everyone I know in UK sell off their properties and go to a warm climate to live and you seem to be wanting to do the opposite! No wonder you think Legless is a rogue punter with that type of mentality.

btw, you have no chance of getting a permanent visa for your GF - you will have to make the sacrifice of getting married to her first I am afraid...!!

well dreamer nothing wrong with wanting to go back to your roots as for warm climates well lets see there is the property in cyprus and my australian passport to some of the most stunning beaches and rain forests in the world my aussie super and yes enough cash to buy a reasonable flat in old london town and as for the girlfriend well im not stressing

i may just live in asia for awhile until things pick up

if i really thought peg was for real i wouldnt have made a fuss but i know a scam when i see one thats my opinion and we are on a forum that is devoted to opinions as for that geelong tent i cant see why somebody would drag old posts that have nothing to do with the topic this was done to try and humiliate but it failed sadly geelong tent lives a sheltered life in a one room boarding house for old fellas

So peg should have his visa by now ,sure would like to know how he can live so well on $76 per week i mean thats slum dog status

Svamp, I don't know how long you've been there yet but what do you make of the crime situation there? I get the feeling from the online newspapers that things have improved quite a lot these days (maybe due to more control in Penang from the Chinese community??). What are you hearing?
Hold your horses katongkaren!
I wish I was... I'm still in Sweden. I depart from here the march 31 to Bangkok and in september I take my backpack down to Malaysia.

I have been in Penang in total 9 month divided in three times. I have been everywhere on the Island. Last time I was there was this time of year last year. Went to Cambodia and I had this motorcycle accident.

The thing is I have only been to Penang in Malaysia and I'm not shore were I end up. I will do some traveling next time and check other places.
For me Malaka looks pretty nice from my research on the net. Its only a 2 ours bus ride to KL. Rents in Malaka are also cheaper than Penang and the traffic are supposed to bee less hectic.

I only have one eye now days... have to be care full!
( I guess leggy and me in one person would scare the neighbourhood.... mommy, mommy a real Pirate )

I'm counting down at the moment.... 13 days left for take off!

Regards
SvampBob

I've got a great idea SvampBob. While you're in Bangkok, can you check out where Legless lives. Then you can confirm that Legless is for real and Legless can confirm that you SvampBob are for real - and we'll put to rest all the doubters on here. What d'ya think?

katongkaren, I believe Leggless. I have no doubt he is for
real. I have met westerners in Thailand living like the locals!
There are many out there living on next to nothing. Trust
me! Leggy and many with him have a far more livable
existence in Thailand than they wold back home.
Come on....!

But if Leggy wants, shore... I by him a beer!

Bob ignore Sherpa - this guy seems to believe no-one, that's his problem.

If I ever make it to malaysia it would be my pleasure to buy you and Legless a drink - in fact let's keep in touch so we could at least support each other morally - I've personally found your contribution to this thread invaluable -

Bob, I like your ideas about making a group for like minded ppl and the making of a new thread. The Swedish management capabilites are really showing themselves here - Sweden is a great country with great ppl - I've never been there myself but I know some who have and they've told me about it and its ppl - I support all things constructive and humane - so by getting together we can only achieve better things in our own lives and hopefully help those around us.

Having lived in Penang for more than 25 years and read local newspapers both in Chinese and English everyday, I have never read, seen or heard any news on type of crime you mentiond in the Kuala Lumpur thread. So, I'm quite sceptical about the validity of the news source you were reading from.

For your info, Penang has been administered by chinese minister since 30-40 years ago and not just recently.

I've been to Penang many times and have always seen it as the place that I would eventually love to end up living. The Malay are highly intelligent, lovely, people and I have always found it a very chilled out place. Granted I was on holidays there but for me a little pad out in Batu Ferengi where I could waste away the last few years of my life easting the stunning food, drinking beer, playing pool with the locals and watching the sun go down on that stunning, stunning, beach is all I could ask for.

To be honest the internet services there always seem to be pretty decent and I could probably live and work from there now, but we are committed to our move to Australia for our children. Once they are old enough I will certainly investigate it again.

Such a great place and seemed a dirt cheap place to live for a Westerner with even moderate savings

Thanks for your input, I read it with interest.

What's the night life in Penang? I mean are there any discos or even casinos?

Can we please get this thread back on track? Some people actually want to glean information on Penang from this thread and we can do without the personal abuse being mixed in with it.

Why Penang is an ideal place to live in or retire :

1) Penang still exoduses its old world charm with narrow streets lined by pre-war shophouses in the inner city of its capital, Georgetown. Georgetown is now a UNESCO world’s heritage site. However, old doesn’t mean it has to be associated with poor and low quality of life. In fact, Penang was rated the Top 5 Best Asian Cities to live in by Asiaweek in 1995, and Top 10 Best Asian Cities to Live in by ECA International in three consecutive years recently.

2) Penang is a blend of old and new too. Beautiful and stylish highrises mostly of residential properties overlooking the sea or hill are now mushrooming the suburbs of Penang, meaning that it offers high standard lifestyle to both locals and foreigners.

3) Penang is the top choice of Malaysia-My Second Home’s (MM2H) participants to live in. Most of them are British, Australians and Japanese.

4) Penang’s medical standard is on par with that of in Singapore and other western countries, but a lot cheaper than its counterparts. Again, Penang is now the city that receives the highest number of foreign patients seeking treatment in Malaysia through the promotion of its medical tourism. All doctors speak English and most of them are of UK or Ireland trained.

5) Undisputedly, Penang is a food paradise. Everyone knows about this fact.

6) Most locals speak good English.

7) Locals are warm and friendly. This is one of the factors that keeps many tourists going back to Penang year by year.

8) Penang has beaches although they are not the best in the region.

9) Penang has lovely and leafy avenues in its suburbs. Most avenues are lined with hundred- years-old trees planted by British decades ago. There are also English-style mansions interspersing with woods and privates gardens.

10) Penang boasts one of the oldest and finest botanic gardens in Malaysia, and has many other lovely parks and hills.

11) Penang has the world’s smallest national park.

12) Penang is relatively safe to live in.

13) Penang’s living cost is relatively low.

14) Most streets’ names are of English origin. For example, Scotland Road, Church Street, King Street, Queen Street, Pitt Street, Light Street, Cecil Street, Macalister Road and many more.

15) Penang’s population is predominantly Chinese, but there are other races such as Malays, Indians etc living together harmoniously.

16) Penang is a Silicon Valley of the East where multinational companies such as Dell, Intel, Seagate, Siemens, Motorola, Honeywell etc set up their offices there; and hence, has a large number of expatriates living on the island too. Penag is also among the top 31 potential outsourcing centres in the world (KPMG), and the world’s top 10 most active investment centres (UNIDO).

17) Penang has several international schools such as Uplands International School, Dalat International School, St. Christopher School, Tenby International School etc.

18) Penang has good insfrastructure system and international airport that serves direct flights to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Medan, Phuket, Koh Samui, Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Hong Kong, Taipei, Guangzhou and Xiamen.

19) Penang has sizeable nightlife scene although not very great.

20) Other world’s recognitions and awards that Penang has received so far :

The 44 Places to Go in 2009, No 2 & 22 (By New York Times)

The Rating of World’s Historic Places in 2008, No 64 (By National Geographic Travel)

2007 The 20 Best Islands to Live in (By Island Magazine, Jul-Aug2007 Issue)

2007 The 8 Best Islands in Food (By Island Magazine, Jul-Aug2007 Issue)

The Top 3 Islands in South East Asia (By Travel+Leisure)
