well dreamer nothing wrong with wanting to go back to your roots as for warm climates well lets see there is the property in cyprus and my australian passport to some of the most stunning beaches and rain forests in the world my aussie super and yes enough cash to buy a reasonable flat in old london town and as for the girlfriend well im not stressing

I wish I was... I'm still in Sweden. I depart from here the march 31 to Bangkok and in september I take my backpack down to Malaysia.

I have been in Penang in total 9 month divided in three times. I have been everywhere on the Island. Last time I was there was this time of year last year. Went to Cambodia and I had this motorcycle accident.

The thing is I have only been to Penang in Malaysia and I'm not shore were I end up. I will do some traveling next time and check other places.
For me Malaka looks pretty nice from my research on the net. Its only a 2 ours bus ride to KL. Rents in Malaka are also cheaper than Penang and the traffic are supposed to bee less hectic.

I only have one eye now days... have to be care full!
( I guess leggy and me in one person would scare the neighbourhood.... mommy, mommy a real Pirate )

I'm counting down at the moment.... 13 days left for take off!

Bob, I like your ideas about making a group for like minded ppl and the making of a new thread. The Swedish management capabilites are really showing themselves here - Sweden is a great country with great ppl - I've never been there myself but I know some who have and they've told me about it and its ppl - I support all things constructive and humane - so by getting together we can only achieve better things in our own lives and hopefully help those around us.

Having lived in Penang for more than 25 years and read local newspapers both in Chinese and English everyday, I have never read, seen or heard any news on type of crime you mentiond in the Kuala Lumpur thread. So, I'm quite sceptical about the validity of the news source you were reading from.

For your info, Penang has been administered by chinese minister since 30-40 years ago and not just recently.

I've been to Penang many times and have always seen it as the place that I would eventually love to end up living. The Malay are highly intelligent, lovely, people and I have always found it a very chilled out place. Granted I was on holidays there but for me a little pad out in Batu Ferengi where I could waste away the last few years of my life easting the stunning food, drinking beer, playing pool with the locals and watching the sun go down on that stunning, stunning, beach is all I could ask for.

To be honest the internet services there always seem to be pretty decent and I could probably live and work from there now, but we are committed to our move to Australia for our children. Once they are old enough I will certainly investigate it again.

Such a great place and seemed a dirt cheap place to live for a Westerner with even moderate savings

Why Penang is an ideal place to live in or retire :

1) Penang still exoduses its old world charm with narrow streets lined by pre-war shophouses in the inner city of its capital, Georgetown. Georgetown is now a UNESCO world’s heritage site.
