Working in Europe with British passport, Brexit
Hi there,
My cousin is eligible for a British passport and is trying to organise it.
He is under the impression, that apparently, when Brexit occurs, he can continue to work in Europe, for the duration of the passport he has.
Therefore, the later you renew your British passport before Brexit is finalised, the longer you can work in Europe.
Is anyone aware if this is true?

Has nothing to do with validity of passport but only with EU/British agreement eventually.

So if one were to be employed in a Eurozone country, on a UK passport right now, when it's finalised (I believe next 12 months or so?) that's it, you must stop working, right?

No-one knows, there has been plenty of statements saying the rights will not be affected, but who knows, certainly not the UK government.

Any rights derived from the UK being a member of the single market has nothing to do with the validity of your passport. If your cousin wants to grandfather his freedom of movement rights in another EU/EEA country then he should ensure he is living and working in the country in question within the next twelve months.

The current indication is that if you will be able to continue to exercise your rights (living/working) in the European country that you reside in at the moment we leave - but that cross-border working/moving will no longer be possible (without whatever visas they conjure up). As it stands, Post Brexit, we will be landlocked; but there is still much to negotiate and it could all change at any given moment. Nothing is agreed until everything is agreed (apparently).

I hope the mods are ok with my posting this.
There is a Facebook group for EU citizens in the UK who are worried about their rights (particularly but not exclusively for those considering taking citizenship). It is run by legal advisers, and the advice is free (but most questions are answered in the FAQs). It is called UKCEN but there is a short waiting list to join the group.
Currently the big IT firms are developing an app for EU people to register their residency for 'settled status' - who knows, it might even be ready this side of 2020....
