Whats Gibraltar like?
Hello people..
As the title asks really,
What is Gibraltar like as a place to work and live?
I have two very good trades under my belt and was just thinking maybe having a year out somewhere abit dryer and warmer than West Wales
First idea of a place that came to mind was Gibraltar as English speaking and currentcy so not so difficult to get about.
Is there much call for Carpenter's in Construction there? I've looked on google and not found anything of great use.
All your help and info greatly received
Jonathan

Most people that work there try to find somewhere close in Spain to live and commute into Gib.
As in Spain you would struggle to get employment in the building industry there as nowdays there is a big amount of unemployment.
Apart from specialist kitchen and bedroom fitting carpentry is almost non existant in the building trade here, most doors and frames are fitted by the brickies, so finding that type of work would be really hard.
Sorry to put a downer on it, but that is how it is at the mo and is going to get worse before it gets better.

Maybe have a look on other forums on here like Oz or Canada, but i honestly think moving anywhere in Europe is like jumping out the frying pan into the fire.

They seem to be very excited at this prospect as it is going to bring in lots of work.
I thought the public transport was very good, you can get a ticket for two costing £3.50 and travel for the day to where ever.
Hope this helps.

Hello Jonathandaniel,
There are still quite a bit of building work going on in Gib, and if you have the skills, you might be lucky. Huge competition for the jobs though.
I am not sure of when the marina ausi dream is referring to will start, but building work has just started for the new airport, Ocean Village is still ongoing along with waterport terraces. Although I would guess neither are hiring.
If you are not here you might find it difficult to get a job, so you would probably need to take a gamble..
Either way, good luck with whatever you decide to do

Gib is a place to visit maybe once or twice, and is very expensive to live there.

[QUOTE=Tinky;7423941]Hello Jonathandaniel,
I am not sure of when the marina ausi dream is referring to will start.
123 Property News speaks to Gregory Butcher, the man behind Ocean Village
Gibraltar’s skyline is being transformed thanks to the continuing construction of Ocean Village, an iconic luxury residential and commercial development on Gibraltar’s western waterfront. The main building, Royal Ocean Plaza, has now reached its full height and is being swiftly finished and fitted out, on schedule for its fortunate residents to be moving in by early next year. The ground is already being cleared for the second phase of Ocean Village; this will consist of two 17- storey buildings, the residents of which will also have access to Ocean Village’s extensive leisure area, home to seven swimming pools, five Jacuzzis, extensive green areas and other attractions. The buildings in the second phase are being built to the same very high specifications as those in the first phase, with floor to ceiling windows, spacious terraces and luxury fittings.
