Default What is the state of the greek IT job market?

Hello there,

I'm a Brit currently living in London and am considering a move to Greece.
I'm a 23 year old computer programmer and have been working in London for the past 2 years for blue chip companies. I've grown tired of the rat-race, rain and grey and am looking for somewhere to live that is more relaxed and with better weather.

Please could someone post me some information on the state of the current greek IT job market?
Has it been as badly affected as the rest of Europe?
Can anyone recommend specific areas of Greece?
Am I mad to consider moving?

Any help and information would be very much appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Try posting your question to alt.travel.greece. It's a (mostly)
sensible newsgroup with several contributors who live in Greece, so you
are quite likely to get a sensible answer.

Already?

Anyway, be advised that the conditions you describe are largely a
consequence of the profession, not the geography. You can avoid the rain
and gray, but the rat race remains. And the less of a rat race you find,
the less you're likely to be paid or sought after, as well.

Has the IT market been badly affected?

    > Am I mad to consider moving?

The grass is always greener somewhere else. I'm surprised that you are
ready to write off any location after only two years, but that's just me. I
find that people who regularly become dissatisfied with their working
conditions may only be transferring dissatisfication in other domains.

Sure, but maybe it's easier to endure in warm weather and with colleagues
who have a Mediterranean attitude about "discipline". I can sympathise with
the idea.

You bet.

If he works in a company used to more 'relaxed' work attitude, he
could be the star of the show, and thus be promoted faster.

Is it better to be a big fish in a small pond, or a small fish in a
big pond???

Maybe, but maybe he is becoming depressed with the lack of sunshine.
The solution could be as simple as buying one of those Phillips Sun
Simulator thingies. (Maybe, not)

The problem with the "Mediterranean attitude" is that it applies to
everything, not just the things you'd like it to apply to. So the work
environment is more casual, but you also have to wait weeks to accomplish
the simple things in life, such as getting a telephone, waiting for the
government to process paperwork, waiting for ordered merchandise to show up,
and so on. Overall, it works out to about the same thing as anywhere else.

    > You bet.

In what way?

Companies like that are often uninterested in "stars," and may even resent
them.

Neither. It's best to be a fish that fits the pond.

When you work in IT, you spend all your life indoors, anyway, so what
difference does it make?

Sounds like Germany. Can't be worse.

Well, everywhere. Software and hardware sales are going down, fewer big
projects, the new economy bubble has burst. Currently the job situation in
that field is quite bad.

Germany operates at lightspeed compared to countries further south.

What percentage of IT workers are unemployed?

True - when I tried to use my laptop on my patio last summer, I couldn't
see a thing on the screen and had to take it back indoors.

So much for Sandra Bullock using her laptop on a Mexican beach in 'The
Net'.

Not necessarily. I switched to a non-profit organization several
years ago. That allowed me to stay in the profession but leave the
corporate rat race. And while I'm well under the corporate salary
structure, I get more than double the vacation time. It's the perfect
situation for someone with wanderlust.

It would be really hard for her to connect to the Net on a Mexican beach,
anyway.

I think the perfect situation is telecommuting. But Europeans are even more
backward in that respect than Americans.
