Housing in Vienna is certainly different - and better than in that other ex-imperial capital, London. Not sure if i can post a link to facebook or youtube here.

If that does not appear try googling George Clarke's Housing, Vienna Rented housing bears a stigma in Britannia but not over the Channel with Johnny Foreigner !

Vienna has some great subsidised housing (with indoor pool, tennis courts and more). Waiting list is at present 5 years. Vienna also has plenty "fleapits". Of course news media picks the one which is the exception.
No doubt this is the same in every city/country.
In order to qualify you need a min. no. of years when you worked and paid tax.

I would never swop Vienna for Berlin. May be Berlin was pleasant in your student days. Now it is a "failed" city where the cops have given up in despair.

I just landed in Vienna this morning and look forward to great food and apple strudel and more.

Berlin is an exciting place, interesting to visit, to spend one or two month in, but Berlin is not forever. Vienna is more an easy going place, it's certainly more for the longer term than Berlin.

Both Berlin as well as Vienna have issues with immigrants not wanting to accept the local laws and basic rules of the western ways of life, not even attempting to learn proper German. One can deem this opinion as racist or right wing, however if it was the UK the situation would even be better. Berlin is home to arabic clan families where even the local Berlin police have issues dealing with them. In Vienna this is all to a lesser extend.

I love Vienna. It has great public transportation, health care and universities. Mainly the city is clean, has a lot of cultural objects, museums, theatres, etc. On the other hand, many of them are very touristic.
Well, the prices are slightly bigger than in some big European capitals, but if you will get a well-paid job, this is not an issue, I guess.
Most noteworthy, the mountains, they are not too far away. So in the summer or when you are just tired of the city rush, enjoy the amazing views just a few hours away by car.

All in all, I think this is a great place to live. Not only Vienna but Austria as well.

I have just booked an appartment for a few days in the Sandleiten district. The cost of restaurants and accomodation doesn't seem too bad in that area of the city.
Do any of you have any recomendations for a visit to Vienna?

Yes, these parts about Austria you mentioned are very nice. These few hours away in a car can be very beneficial, if one is used to the long distances in countries like Canada... Only 2 or 3 hours from Vienna and one finds himself in a decent ski resort. ..

The Karl Marx Hof is interesting. I wouldn't have cared to share the bathroom and laundry with 5000 neighbours. The Hundertwasser House looks a bit like Gaudi houses in Barcelona.

it would really be easier if there was a forum specifically for Austria. Then we could have a separate thread for architecture in Vienna. It would be another big subject anyway.

Just a thought, maybe start your own Facebook page or website for British expats living in Austria?

You could declare war and invade Malta. There were only 8 threads started this year.

"Toytown" forum could be the playground the Op is looking for.
