Default TV sets

Hi
First post on here so hope it works !
We are shortly moving to Portugal and want to know if our tv can be modified to work over there. Our thinking is we should be able to use it with the sky system. Is that right? (Green to all this sorry.)

you know what signal they broadcast? I can't remember, but somewhere one of the articles on this site has a list of all the signals, so worth a search to see if it's PAL, if it ain't, it ain't worth converting the tele, be cheaper to buy a new one.

if you don't want to watch normal tele off the airwaves, and use sat or cable or whatever they have, they should work fine using the av sockets.

and welcome to the site

just googled, anyway, Portugal use PAL, but basically slightly different, so with the antennae, you'll be able to pick up the video, but not the sound...so would have to use something that's fed in the AV sockets like satellite, cable, or perhaps through a video player, don't know on that score though.

Thank you Bob. Basically, we are not avid television watchers, so we will definately not be watching Portugese originated programmes. We were wondering whether satellite dishes using, maybe, Sky television, would allow us to use our existing television set. It is a very new set, and it did set us back £2,400, so we're reluctant to dispense with it!

If its a recent TV it should work all over europe, one of ours bought in UK a few years ago works fine in Spain with cable but antenna is only mono.

Sky will work ok on anything, but its handy if you can get the local stations too cos it helps learning the langauge
If its a plasma or lcd it will definitely work cos the ask what country you are in on the setup.
Just put son in laws lcd in a week ago and it found the cable channels and the Spanish ok.

Yes you can use sky over there (I do for here in the netherlands). However you will need a bigger dish (which part will you be living in, north or south?) as this will depend on the size on your dish. I guess about 1.5 metres as this will asure you get a good signal in crap weather. The dish should set you back by about 250 euros (for a proper one + lnb and cables). Pop over to the forums on digitalspy.co.uk and ask as there are some expats from spain who know where to get good dishes and may just know for portugal.

Make sure your sky card is still registered at an english address, english bank account and keep quiet from sky about it and all should be fine.
