London is awful on new year's eve. There aren't usually any decent fireworks,
the 'celebration' around Trafalgar Square is dire because no drinks are
allowed anywhere near it, and the crowd are told to disperse by the police
just after midnight. It's impossible to travel anywhere because all the
tube stations are shut and buses are diverted. And then it costs a stupid
amount of money to get in to any pub or nightclub.

Go to Amsterdam or Berlin instead. People there are allowed to have fun.

Just to offer a specific contrast, in Amsterdam:

- People are happily drinking outside in the squares.
- The crowd stays until it fizzles out on its own (3am or so, though the
freezing drizzle can run them off sooner).
- Plenty of bars in the happening areas don't charge covers or other special
fees on New Year's Eve.
- The police are not hassling anyone.

On the other hand, the trains don't run at all from late afternoon until the
next morning. So you better have a place to stay in the city. If you're out
in Haarlem or something, you're screwed - no chance you'll get a cab unless
you've hired one for the day (at which cost you could just buy a house on
Rembrandtplein instead).

That's strange - on past New Year's Eves, the Tube has stayed open until
around 4am and travel is free on it.

However, London Underground doesn't usually announce its plans until
much nearer the date.

Can't argue with the rest of it, though, which is not good. This could
be my first Xmas and New Years Eve in London for donkey's.

By the way what time do trains stop running from Schipol to Centraal on
New Years Eve? I will have to make that journey, in the mid-afternoon...

But all stations in the central area are closed. Last year I to walk down
to Oval (45 mins from Trafalgar Square) to get the Northern Line. Nightmare!

I believe it's generally about 6pm. But you should check on the www.ns.nl
web site as the date approaches.

In that case I'll be staying well away from the centre in droves at that
time of night.

(or sylvester)

Let's just say it's like a war zone! Around Brandenburger Tur people have
no hesitation in throwing fireworks randomly into the crowd. Definitely not
for the faint-hearted.

I think the best place to see the fireworks is at the top of a hill about 3
miles out from the centre. Can't remember what it's called but you get a
360 degree panoramic view of the city. Very nice. Much less hectic.
But very cold :-(
