I will be applying for a partnership visa/residency. All paper work etc is prepared. I’m going to purchase private medical insurance. Before I do, is it necessary or does my global uk health card cover this?

It will work here for visits before you are resident but only you can decide whether the coverage meets with your particular needs. Does it only cover emergency treatment? Routine treatment? Pre-existing conditions? Etc. Some things it definitely won’t be covered like repatriation to the UK if you have a serious injury or condition that will require extended treatment. You may well need travel insurance to cover the gaps that the GHIC won’t cover.
