Just turned 18 and wanting to move away.
Hello everyone, I am really sick of the UK. Im sick of the weather, the state of mind (the way you cannot just be a nice person without getting the piss ripped out of you), the idiotic chav culture (See the everton game last night anyone?), the way that people have to be pissed to have fun. It all just depresses me
I was wondering, what is the best place to move to inside the EU where people actually respect one another, a place where the weather is nice and the people are friendly, because seriously, I want to get out of this miserable country while I still can.

The phrase "same shit different place" often jumps to mind
In my experience people who leave the UK for the kind of reasons you mention often get disappointing results
Holidaying in places and living in places are very different propositions, so you may find that apart from the weather, things may not be so different.
Having said that, if you feel strongly about it then you should have a go and hopefully someone here will be able to recommend an area that fits your requirements

Depends really, can you speak any other languages and what do you want to do as a job? There are idiots like that everywhere, just an advantage that you can't understand them so don't yet know if they are idiots!

Hi, as mentioned, do you speak any European languages? What type of job would you be looking for, bearing in mind that that an English-speaking national of your chosen country would be given priority on the work market?
I think you should start wondering how you're going to earn a living at 18, i.e. have a regular monthly income of more than 1000€ to survive. In France for example, you'd have problems renting an appartment on the Minimum Wage. The unemployment rate in the 18-25 range here is extremely high, school-leavers and post-graduates looking for a first job are having a tough time.
Sorry to be such a wet blanket, but most of Continental Europe is struggling to get out of the on-going economic crisis and you'd be advised to get some (more) qualifications, learn a language and see how the situation develops in the next few years.
You could try posting on the Scandinavia Forum, they may be more optimistic. All Scandinavians speak English - work prospects will depend on what your qualifications are.

As the other posters have mentioned, they'll be people who annoy the hell out of you everywere you go. I'd say it's probably best to find reasons to move TO a new country, rather than to just be running away FROM one, if that makes sense.
Although there are few career opportunities for someone your age I would say go for it anyway. You are young enough that you can waste a year without too much ill effect. The experience may even open your eyes to some things you would never have thought of otherwise.
It's be hard to find a career, as I said, but you could probably find some kind of work. There are volunteer opportunities, which don't really pay beyond providing you with food and shelter. There are also some labour exchange 'working holiday' things you can do, where you go and spend a summer helping someone renovate an old house, or look after their farm. Hard work for basically food and lodging, but it would at least give you a perspective on living abroad and a good break from the UK and that might me enough to put things in perspective and help you realise what you want to do. Either way, it'll be a good experience (and probably with better weather )

I'm of the opinion that in the bigger picture the UK isnt such a bad place to live and I'm very happy that I have a place there that I can go back to when I feel I need to

Yeah, I'd say anywhere in Europe isn't a bad place to live, when looking at it on a global scale. Each country has its pleasures and its pains. It's just a case of finding the place where you personally feel good - mostly by finding the place whose negatives points you can more easily ignore or adapt to.

Hi hope your ok
I was in the same situation as you last year, at the age of 18 I wanted to move away but didn't know where to start!
So I started my career working overseas for a travel company, Its great fun and you get to visit many different places, I go to a different country every season so I know what its like to live in different places, and to help find a place I would like to settle down in.
Last summer I was working in Turkey, I learnt the language etc. some people I worked with loved it so much, decided to get a 'working visa' and work in hotels etc after the summer season.
Heres some links to apply for overseas roles:

Its a great starting point to get a feel of what its like to live and work abroad

I joined the Royal Navy (OK a bit extreme) at 16yrs 1month and in 12 months I had received basic and specialist training and was on a plane to Singapore for 12months ! ! (OK perhaps a bit more extreme and it was a few decades ago)
But I am sure for someone with the right attitude, working for a travel company, as a rep or similar will provide you with so much sharp end experience in such a short period of time you will have forgotten how young and unhappy you are.
It is a difficult age - believe me, we have all experienced it, and didnt just get born old
Experience in life and people can only come with time, its what you do with that time that counts.
Standing on street corners, taking the p**s out of passersby and flicking used gum at people (as recently witnessed) will lead to a warped mind, and you are far beyond that.
Good luck, if you get a chance come back and tell us what you are doing

I feel sorry that someone so young is so desperate to get away to anywhere, not though a desire for adventure, freedom or excitment, but through desperation.
I feel that a move may not be the best thing for you, as I think you will have such high and unrealistic expectaions of what life abroad will be like, and to be honest people are people wherever they live

Re: Just turned 18 and wanting to move away.
Eastern europe could be a good idea, though does get cold in the winters.
Coming up to the summer, I would suggest Czech Republic and Krakow (Poland), people are lovely in both countries, and if you stay out of the center, they are still very cheap places to live.
If you were thinking more further afield, maybe Greece? Economy is going down the pan at the moment, but weather will remain nice, people are lovely and food is to die for! (I would recommend learning to play backgammon before you go, and get used to the taste of coffee as both are very popular over there from my experience).
If you are looking for a break, but want to hold back on the purse strings, have you had a look at wwoff-ing? 'Google it'.
Good luck,
George

OH Cain, your post makes me feel sad, really, as young free and single you should be having the time of your life.

Its the same with me Im 18 and live in the valleys of South Wales being the poorest borough in the poorest region of England and Wales. Ive always found life miserable and depressing here. Being kicked out of my home this year, I have about 10 friends I talk to from week to week and everyone else seems to be in their own click, none of them come out because their all skint and on the dole and due to the massive instability this year ive had to quit college and have been trying to find work for months in vain.
Ive been in College for two years doing Plastering and even anfter all that hard work couldnt find any placements so couldnt complete the second year due to not having the skills. Look this is how it is Ive failed miserably in life also in school a lot of it due to bullying, have not talked to any of my family in 6 months Ive never even had a relationship yet alone ***.
Theres nothing wrong with me socially im a great guy does sport, looks good ectect. I could walk in a room with 10 strangers and all have them talking its just this place. Ill almost role the dice on my life to find happiness ill be snooping round here from time to time looking for info if I do make it ill help as many on here as possible when successive

Another option, given your age, is the European Commission's Voluntary Service for young people. You get board and lodgings and work on community projects throughout the EU.
