Now that's interesting (to me). We have had many very happy holidays in Portugal - when the opportunity to retire & emigrate came up we considered Portugal, for about 5 minutes, then quickly decided on Hungary!

Of course it sounds easier than it is and nobody can say where you will find best healthcare as the public system has reached it's limits in many countries and every hospital has different staff. A good system on paper doesn't guarantee good treatment and I always say look at the location and your personal situation. Malta is tiny/overcrowded and Gozo has fewer people, but no jobs. Italy and Spain just depends on location and some parts see more rain than we have in Ireland. We have a holiday home in Girona province and around Barcelona would offer more jobs for German speakers and sees 2500 hours of sunshine, but rentals very expensive and a lot of apartments don't even have a balcony. And salaries not great either.
But if the OP takes up residence in whichever member state other than the one they currently reside in that won't apply as it applies to "cross-border healthcare".
I quote from the relevant EU Directive re cross-border healthcare "healthcare provided in a Member State other than that in which the recipient of the care is resident".

If you are resident in Spain you also have access to healthcare in Germany. Of course one has to read the fine print and depending which country you live in can mean that some things aren't covered or might cost. https://health.ec.europa.eu/document...afletet_en.pdf
Generally speaking any service that your home country offers can be done in another EU country.

Your right to have the costs
of treatment covered
• If you are entitled to a particular treat-
ment in your home country, then you
have a right to be reimbursed when
you receive it in another country.
• Your level of reimbursement will be up
to the costs of that treatment in your
home country.
• You may choose whichever healthcare
provider you wish, whether public or
private.
• For some treatments (certain in-pa-
tient or highly specialised services) you
may be required to get authorisation
from your own health system before
receiving the treatment abroad.
• If you are facing a medically unjustifia-
ble waiting time for treatment at home
then authorisation must be granted. In
this case, you may even be entitled
to a higher level of coverage for your
healthcare costs.

Agreed, I mis-read your other post as suggesting he could become resident in Spain with Austria picking up the costs of his healthcare in Spain due to his Austrian citizenship, thereby not being subject to the same healthcare costs in Spain that every other Spanish resident is liable for.

Not as bad as Madrid and they can see more snow and too hot in summer/like Seville or cities further inland. Malaga and Marbella are popular but again depends what one does for a living. Reality can be very different.
I can teach English, but would prefer an office job, maybe in content editing or marketing.

To clarify, I'm a UK. As for Spain, as far as I know, the healthcare is free if you have a job there.

Many do speak English and apparently the language is much easier than Hungarian!

I'm afraid I don't know anything about the health care.

There is a BE member (see below) who used to live in Hungary but then moved to Croatia a couple of years ago. I believe they left the UK for health reasons.

Sorry, I was more active when I lived in Hungary (which has a forum here).
